Dubrovnik
Known as the “Pearl of the Adriatic,” Dubrovnik was founded in the 7th century by a group of refugees from Epidaurum (today’s Cavtat). It is known worldwide for its unique marble-paved squares, tall houses, steep-cobbled streets and fountains. The city walls, once used to as protection against its enemies, now keep motorists at bay in this picturesque town. UNESCO named the Old City a World Heritage Site, and Dubrovnik’s beautiful historic sites have been restored.
The following Shore Excursions are available for this port on this cruise, and may be reserved beginning 180 days before the cruise begins.
Discover the epicurean delights and scenic vistas of historic Dubrovnik during this relaxing tour along the Adriatic Coast.
Depart the ship for a pleasant ride via coach along the Adriatic Coast. A stop will be made in the charming village of Orasac, where olive oil is produced in a traditional horse-driven mill. Sample some homemade cheeses, smoked ham and wine before continuing on to Ston, the Oyster Capital of Croatia. Magnificent walls over 3 miles long surround this little town, which is regarded as a smaller version of Dubrovnik. Construction on the walls, among the longest defensive walls in the world, began in 1317 and took two centuries to complete.
Next, you will see the ancient salt pans used during the Dubrovnik Republic. Although salt is still produced here, Ston is especially noted for its delicious oysters and an abundance of oyster farms. Continue on to the small town of Mali Ston for a delicious lunch consisting of seafood pasta and risotto accompanied by a good local wine. Afterward, you will proceed to the small village of Ponikve to visit the cellars of the Milos family, one of the best-known wine cellars of this region. During a wine tasting, you will have an opportunity to sample some of the famous red and white wines of the Peljesac Peninsula.
Following your tour, you will reboard your coach for the return drive along the seashore to the ship.
Please note: Guests are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes for this tour which involves moderate walking and 25 steps to climb.
