Valparaíso, Chile-port

Valparaíso is the principal port and second largest city of Chile. The city is situated on the shores of a sweeping bay and on a crescent of hills behind. Seen from the ocean, it presents a majestic panorama; a great circle of hills is backed by the snow-capped peaks of the distant Cordillera. Due to Valparaiso’s convenient location along the shipping routes circling Cape Horn, the port experienced a tremendous boost when the ports and the Americas were opened to world trade.

Explore Valparaíso's stunning beauty and world-renowned architecture during this picturesque half-day orientation tour of the city.

Depart the pier for a scenic drive through Valparaíso. The city consists of two completely different sections: the lower part adjacent to the port area is known as El Plan, and the hillside section is known as Los Cerros, or El Plan Alto. Your first stop will be at the Paseo 21 de Mayo promenade for superb views and photo opportunities of the city and bay.

Next, you will descend to El Plan. Along the way, you will pass by the Naval Headquarters Building and Plaza Sotomayor's impressive Monument to the Heroes of Iquique. You will then cross the historic business center. Here, you will see the Turri Building and El Mercurio Building, where Chile's oldest newspaper is still in operation, along with the Stock Exchange and Public Library.

Your tour will continue on through Plaza Victoria, which was the heart of all social life during the 1880s. In front of Plaza Victoria stands the Cathedral, which was built between 1930 and 1950. Afterward, you will have an opportunity to ride on one of Valparaíso's most picturesque funiculars before proceeding for a visit to "La Sebastiana", one of the museum houses of the laureate Nobel Prize winner, Pablo Neruda, famous for its astonishing architecture and impressive variety of memorabilia.

Following a stop for refreshments at the quaint yet beautiful square located on Alegre Hill, you will descend to El Plan of Valparaíso on El Peral, another amazing funicular. Afterward, you will re-board your coach for the return drive to the pier.

Please Note: In case the call is programmed on a Saturday, the visit to La Sebastiana Museum will be replaced with a visit to the Naval Museum
