Traditional Estancia La Rabida and Monte
Duration: 6 1/2 hours
Tour Code: mvd-002
Experience the lifestyle of a Uruguayan gaucho from a unique perspective during this memorable visit to the Estancia La Rábida.
Depart the pier for a brief tour of the city of Montevideo en route to the Estancia La Rábida, where a visit will be made to the ranch of a traditional Uruguayan family. This authentic 3.65-acre ranch is home to 650 milking cows producing 45 gallons of milk daily, and incorporates a milking process that has been observed by Agricultural Secretaries of State from several countries.
La Ribida's fields end abruptly in high cliffs above the beaches on the coast of the Rio de la Plata. The ranch's ideal blend of pastoral, simplicity and cultural refinement has made it the preferred choice of the Uruguayan government for the purposes of entertaining, and offering distinguished guests an authentic glimpse of Uruguayan life. During such visits, guests are served a traditional barbecue, or asado, accompanied by a wide array of natural salads and national wines.
Upon arrival, you will be warmly greeted by the owners and staff, then have an opportunity to observe traditional music and dances, go horseback riding (at your own risk), tour the countryside, go bird-watching, or learn about the daily chores of gaucho life, including sheep-shearing or milking.
During your visit, a barbecue lunch consisting of beef, chicken and lamb cooked over an open fire will be accompanied by a selection of salads and dessert.
Following your visit, you will re-board your coach for the return drive to the pier.
Please note: This tour involves moderate walking on dirt surfaces. Participants must be able to climb in-and-out of dray trucks or carriages on their own. Comfortable clothing and sturdy shoes are recommended. Seating at lunch will be on straw bales. Lunch includes soft drinks, mineral water and wine.
