Cartagena is a Spanish Mediterranean city with more than 2,500 years of history. Each corner, street and square offers travelers monumental examples of its splendorous historical past. The origins of the city are shown at the Punic Wall, which marks the foundation of the city by the Carthaginians in 227 BC. Cartagena has been the capital of the Spanish Navy’s Maritime Department of the Mediterranean since the arrival of the Spanish Bourbons in the eighteenth century.

    This wonderful full-day excursion travels to the holy town of Caravaca de la Cruz. Just like Rome, Santiago de Compostela, Jerusalem and Lebanon, it was named a holy city in 1998 by Pope John Paul II. The town celebrates its Jubilee every seven years and in 2003, it was visited by the then Cardinal Ratzinger, who is now the present Pope.

    Your day begins with a picturesque drive of just under 2-hours to the Old Quarter of Caravaca de la Cruz. Upon arrival, you will leave your coach behind and with your guide leading the way, walk to the city's most famous site, The Sanctuary of the Santísima and Vera Cruz (true cross). Declared of Historic-Artistic Heritage by the Spanish tourist board, the most important feature of the Sanctuary is the cross, which has become the symbol of the town. Within the Cross there are two pieces of the true cross that Christ was crucified on and during your time at the Sanctuary, you will have the opportunity to see this revered cross. After what will no doubt be an unforgettable visit at the Sanctuary, you will continue on foot to the Old Town Square where lunch will be provided at a local restaurant.

    Following lunch, you will begin your return to journey to Cartagena, making one final stop along the way to see the Marqués Fountains. This is one of the most picturesque sites in the region of Murcia and you will have some free time here to take in the natural beauty of this location at your leisure.

    Please note: This tour includes a significant amount of walking and there is some steep uphill walking at the Sanctuary as well as cobblestone surfaces to negotiate in the Old Quarter. The tour is not considered suitable for wheelchair guests or those with mobility concerns. Light weight clothing; sun cap; sunglasses, sunscreen and flat, comfortable walking shoes are suggested. It is also recommended that participants bring a bottle of water from the ship. The order of the sights viewed or visited may vary. Most shops in Cartagena close at noon Mon-Sat and do not open on Sundays.

Free Unlimited Shore Excursions are for full fare guests only, capacity controlled and subject to availability. Requested excursions may not be available at time of booking. Tours require minimum participation levels to operate so please sign up as early as possible. Tours may be cancelled if minimum participation levels are not met.
