Lanzarote, Spain-port

Volcanic eruptions formed the Canary Islands, just off the coast of Africa. The smaller of the two main islands, Lanzarote is unique in natural beauty and rich in folkloric legend. The Genoese named the island during their 14th century visit. In 1730, a violent volcanic eruption occurred, creating six new mountains. In 1824 another massive eruption spread molten lava all over the island. It was these geographic upheavals that gave the island the unique, almost lunar landscape of the Fire Mountains, now Timanfaya National Park. View the home of César Manrique, the island’s most famous artistand native son. The outside and upper level of his home, now a museum, is inspired by traditional Lanzarote architecture. Constructing buildings as organic form, the interior spaces of his home utilize five volcanic bubbles for the main rooms.

    Duration: 3 hours

Behold the teeming marine life off Lanzarote's southwestern shore from the comfort of a modern, air-conditioned submarine.

It's a short drive from the pier to the marina at Puerto Calero, located on the southwest coast of Lanzarote. The area has long attracted sailors, as it's naturally sheltered from the island's prevalent northeasterly winds. However, it wasn't until the late 1980s, with the opening of the marina that Puerto Calero developed into a luxurious destination. One of its biggest draws is the submarine tour of the surrounding waters.

Upon arrival, you'll receive a safety briefing and then board the submarine and settle in for your underwater adventure. There are large viewing ports throughout, and the water is typically crystal-clear, enabling you to easily observe the abundant marine life that was once only seen by divers.

More than 500 species inhabit the unique, volcanically formed underwater world off Puerto Calero, and there's no telling what you'll spot. Flat-bodied angel sharks may be lying partially buried on the bottom, waiting to ambush prey. Massive groupers can frequently be seen swimming about, along with a variety of graceful manta rays. You might even catch sight of an ocean sunfish, known as a mola mola, which often weighs more than a ton, making it the world's heaviest bony fish.

After approximately one hour underwater, the submarine will surface, and upon disembarkation, you'll enjoy some free time at the marina. There is shopping, restaurants and plenty of other interesting diversions. Afterwards, you'll rejoin your coach and travel back to the pier in Arrecife.

Please note: This tour includes limited walking, mainly at the guests' discretion during free time at the marina. However, there is a steep ladder that must be negotiated to enter and exit the submarine. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests or those with mobility concerns. Weather-appropriate clothing; sun cap; sunglasses; and flat, comfortable walking shoes are recommended. The minimum age to participate is four years old.
