Port Vila, Vanuatu-port

Vanuatu has been inhabited for thousands of years, the oldest archaeological evidence dating to 2000 BC. In 1605, the Portuguese explorer Pedro Fernández de Quirós became the first European to reach the islands, believing it to be part of Terra Australis. Europeans began settling the islands in the late 18th century, after British explorer James Cook visited the islands on his second voyage, and gave them the name New Hebrides. Nestled in the verdant embrace of Erakor Rainforest, discover the ancient folklore and culture of a Melanesian village. Hike to the top of a 65-foot cascading waterfall, and enjoy a refreshing swim in a rock pool and incomparable views. Embark on a sailing yacht bound for the Pango Peninsula and snorkel the turquoise waters of Paradise Cove. Markets sell everything from island jewelry to gorgeous handicraft bags, to traditional sarongs.

Immerse yourself in the exotic art and customs of Vanuatu on this definitive tour of Port Vila's most revealing cultural attractions, some of which are quite unique.

Commencing from the pier, you'll begin your exploration of Port Vila with a short drive to the Michoutouchine Pilioko Foundation, an Oceanic art gallery and studio named for its two resident artists. Browsing the collections of contemporary paintings and ethnographic art, you'll notice that the color palette tends to be extremely bright and exotic, a reflection of the South Pacific's natural hues and inspirational effect on the local artists.

It's an uplifting beginning to the tour and makes for a wonderful introduction to the even more comprehensive collections found in the National Museum of Vanuatu located a short distance away. Here, you'll delve deeply into the island culture through photographs, multi-media art and artifacts such as outrigger canoes, traditional pottery and ceremonial headdresses. You'll also discover the origin of ancient Vanuatu legends that still influence many of the islanders today.

Continuing on, you'll next visit the Secret Garden, a rather strange botanical garden that features an actual cannibal hut, local wildlife like coconut crabs and, of course, exotic plants. There's also an exhibit detailing Vanuatu's role as a staging area for Allied troops during World War II. If all this cultural variety whets your appetite to shop for some representative art or crafts, you'll have time at one of the local markets before driving back to the pier.

Please note: This tour includes approximately 2-hours of moderate standing/walking, plus any additional done at the guests' discretion during free time. There may be a few steps and some natural terrain to negotiate. The tour is available to wheelchair guests who have a collapsible wheelchair, are able to make their own way on and off the coach and have an able-bodied companion to assist them. Those with mobility concerns are cautioned to carefully evaluate their personal level of stamina and ability. Casual, light-weight clothing; sun cap; sunglasses; sunscreen; and flat, comfortable walking shoes are recommended. It is suggested participants also bring a bottle of water from the ship. The marketplace accepts local currency and Australian dollars.
