This fascinating multi-cultural city which sits at the crossroads of Africa and Europe between the Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic Ocean has a rich and diverse history. Once regarded as a glamorous international destination, the city still retains an air of mystery and has a character all its own.

When Morocco became a French protectorate in 1912, the future of Tangier became a matter of controversy and France, England and Spain mutually agreed that an acceptable compromise had to be reached. It was finally decided that Tangier would become an International zone, under the joint administration of eight countries and monitored by a mendoub (Sultan's representative). It wasn't until 1956 that Tangier would finally be reunited with the rest of Morocco following the restoration of full sovereignty. In recent years, looking for new ways to encourage foreign investment in Morocco, the government has re-established Tangier as a free trade zone.

Your tour begins with a scenic drive to the mountain-top location of Cap Spartel, passing some beautiful villas, the Governor's residence and the King's Summer Palace along the way. Arriving at the summit, you'll find a dominating stone lighthouse and be treated to some magnificent views of the rocky coastline and sapphire waters of the Strait of Gibraltar. After a brief photo stop, you'll re-board your coach and continue on to the fascinating Hercules caves for a visit. The cave openings face the Atlantic and when the water rushes in at high tide, it creates a spectacular sight as it surges through the massive holes and hillside openings. Even at low tide, the scene as you look outward from the caves to the vivid blue sea is quite stunning. Legend has it that it is upon this very spot that the mythological hero Hercules rested before carrying out his 12 labors which granted him immortality.

Leaving the caves behind, you'll next travel to Tangier for the visit of the Kasbah and its square. Continue by foot to the medina, downwards of tiny streets boarded with fabric shops to the animated colourful Souks. You will be given free time for shopping at the Grand Socco before driving back to the harbour.

Please note: This tour consists of approximately 2 1/2 hours of moderate walking over mostly flat surfaces. Wheelchair guests must have someone who can assist them and it is recommended that those guests with mobility concerns should evaluate their personal level of ability and stamina. Lightweight clothing, a hat and flat, comfortable walking shoes are suggested.
