Takoradi, Ghana-port

The Portuguese explorers who landed in the country in 1471 named it the Gold Coast. English, Danish, Dutch and Germans built their forts (castles )here to reap the abundant riches. In the 17th century, Frederick William, the Great Elector of Brandenburg, built a fort called Taccarary which later became known as Takoradi. Visitors can observe a window into the natural world of Ghana at the Monkey Hill nature preserve located in the heart of the city. Further afield join us as we look back at the tragic history of the Atlantic slave trade at Elmina Castle, the earliest known European structure in the tropics; built in 1482 by the Portuguese. Wander the ramparts of Cape Coast Castle and view villagers mending fishing nets and setting out to sea in painted fishing canoes. Explore one of the Ghana’s last remaining tropical forests at Kakum National Park and walk through the verdant canopy.

    Duration: 5 hours

Take a stroll through Africa's Medieval past during this scenic and memorable visit to the Cape Coast and Elmina castles.

Depart the pier for the 1.5-hour drive to the Cape Coast Castle. Originally built by the Dutch in 1637, the castle was captured by the Swedes in 1652 and named Fort Carolusburg. It was later sold to the English and renamed Cape Coast Castle. Upon arrival, you will take a guided tour of the castle. Along the way, you will see the Dalziel Tower, the graves of Governor George McClean and his wife, Leticia London, Palava Hall, where slaves were bought and sold, and mortars and canoes. A visit will also be made to the West African Historical Museum.

Next, you will re-board your coach for the brief drive to the Elmina Beach Resort. After a brief refreshment stop, you will proceed for exterior viewing of Elmina Castle, the oldest European-style fortification ever built outside of Europe. The Portuguese built Elmina Castle in 1482. In 1637, it was captured by the Dutch and sold to the English in 1852. During the photo opportunities to snap the castle's exterior and nearby local harbor with several canoes sporting flags from all over the world, you will see the compass that was purportedly used by Columbus during his voyage to America.

Please note: This tour involves walking over cobblestone streets and uneven surfaces. The restroom facilities offered during the visit to the Cape Coast Castle are not up to the standards encountered at more modern venues.
