St. Helena (Jamestown), St. Helena-port

A proposed UNESCO World Heritage Site, St. Helena’s charm lies in its dramatic coastline. The capital, Jamestown, founded in 1659 by the East India Company, is a small enclave sandwiched between imposing cliffs; and offers some of the very finest examples of British Georgian Era Colonial Architecture. Adventurous visitors can take the opportunity to climb the town’s landmark, 699-step Jacob’s Ladder, built in 1829 and still in use today, to take in the exquisite vistas from its apex. Also worth a visit is nearby Longwood, the renowned site of Napoleon’s final years in exile before his death.

Explore St. Helena's imposing High Knoll Fort and the lovely Plantation House, which was built in the 18th century for the island's governor.

Departing from the pier it's a brief, scenic drive to High Knoll fort. As you approach the Fort, you will be struck by its immense size. The prominent, stone fortress sits more than 1,900 feet above the sea on a barren stretch of land that adds to its fierce appearance. Commenced by the British in 1798, High Knoll Fort wasn't completed until almost a century later. The fort looms over Jamestown and commands spectacular panoramic views in every direction. The Director of the National Trust will guide you around the grounds of the fort, telling the story of its history and pointing out features including the drawbridge, huge round tower and massive defensive walls.

Next, you will tour Plantation House, a charming residence built for St. Helena's governor in 1792. Surrounded by forest, the setting is quite different than that of High Knoll Fort. The home's beautiful Georgian façade faces a manicured lawn where several Seychelles giant tortoises roam about. Jonathan, the oldest tortoise, is reputed to be 180 years old and has lived on the island since he was brought to St. Helena in 1882.

Following your visit at Plantation House, you will transfer back to the pier.

Please Note: This tour includes approximate 1-hour of easy to moderate walking, some of it over gravel and uneven natural surfaces. There is a slight incline and steps to negotiate at High Knoll Fort. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests and those with mobility concerns are cautioned to evaluate their personal level of stamina and ability. Weather appropriate clothing; sun cap; sunglasses and flat, comfortable walking shoes are suggested.
