Port: Costa Maya

Costa Maya

Costa Maya

Costa Maya is the closest port of access to many of the lesser known Mayan ruins in the Yucatan including Chacchoben and Kohunlich. These sites are substantially less excavated than the better known pyramids near Cancun. The Mexican government is trying to improve the standard of living for the Indian population. The path chosen to do this in the Costa Maya area is to develop small-scale ecological based tourism destinations, including natural reserve parks.

The following Shore Excursions are available for this port on this cruise, and may be reserved beginning 180 days before the cruise begins.

Two-Tank Certified Scuba Dive
Tour Code: CMA-4463
Duration: 4 hours
Retail Value: $199.00
Price: $99.00

Regent Choice Diving

Until recently, Costa Maya, or Mahahual, was an undiscovered fishing village. Today, it is rapidly becoming one of the hottest dive spots in the dive community.

Your excursion begins from the pier with a short ride through the town of Mahahual to the eco-friendly dive center. After embarking one of the custom-made dive boats, you will maneuver through the unique local reef corridors en route to the magnificent Meso-American Barrier Reef; the largest barrier reef in the Northern Hemisphere. This particular area is renowned for its healthy and pristine corals, and breathtaking reef formations that form massive ledges and swim-throughs. Upon arrival, you and your guide will explore the marine life commonly experienced here, including turtles, lobsters, stingrays, eels, king crabs, barracuda, nurse sharks, and dolphin. You will also see a variety of tropical reef fish, including damsels, butterfly fish, pork fish, parrot fish, schools of Creole wrasse and blue tangs.

At the conclusion of your dive, you will opt to return to the ship, or stay and experience the local culture and beautiful beaches of Mahahual. Once a fishing village, Mahahual is now a small town thriving with wonderful beachfront shops, restaurants, bars, arts and crafts booths, and more. Whether you are interested in diving, shopping, dining, water sport activities or a relaxing massage on the beach, you will find it in Mahahual. If you choose to stay in Mahahual after the dive excursion, you will be responsible for your own transportation back to the ship, so please be aware of the all-aboard ship time. Taxis are abundant, and will return you to the ship.

Please note: This tour is only recommended for active guests in good physical condition. You must present your dive certification card, and show proof that you have dived within the last two years. All participants must complete a liability waiver, and fulfill all medical requirements. If you have not dived in the last two years, you may want to take a refresher course before your cruise, or select Discover Scuba instead. Guests are advised to wear a swimsuit under a cover-up, sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses, and bring a towel from the ship. Children must be at least 12 years old and accompanied by a parent or guardian to participate on this tour. This tour may not be exclusive to RSSC guests.
