Port: San Juan

San Juan

San Juan

Puerto Rico's first inhabitants were the Taino Indians, who encountered Columbus in 1493. The Spanish quickly settled, defending their territory against the Dutch and British. This is evident by the imposing fortresses of Old San Juan, namely the El Morro Castle, dominating the old section of this capital city. In 1897, Spain declared Puerto Rico an autonomous state. Spain later ceded Puerto Rico to the U.S. and residents were granted American citizenship in 1917.

Most Active Tours Regent Choice

Experience Puerto Rico's pristine natural beauty from a unique perspective during this treetop canopy tour of the La Marquesa Forestry Reserve.

Depart the pier for the drive to the La Marquesa Forestry Reserve, site of the Original Canopy Tour. The Municipality of Guaynabo owns this exquisite 890-acre property, which is located about 30 minutes southwest of San Juan.

Upon arrival at the tour base, you will sign your waiver before being outfitted with your gear. Your gear will consist of a harness, a set of gloves and a helmet, along with a variety of buckles and straps that your guides will attach to the harness. After receiving your safety instructions, you will begin your tour, which includes 8 traverses and 10 platforms that enable you to swing from tree to tree on a safe double-line system.

You will take a brief walk up a short but steep hill, then ascend a narrow, graveled trail slowly leading uphill. Upon reaching the first platform, a wooden deck that accommodates groups of up to 10, you will receive a detailed demonstration of the procedures. After learning about the system, key instructions and positions, you will step up and away into the forest. As you maneuver from platform to platform, you will take in a bird's-eye view of the lush, tropical forest while feeling the excitement of gliding, falling and flying through the treetops.

Following this exhilarating tour, you will return to the tour base, then re-board your coach for the return drive to the pier.

Please note: Although a combination of weight and height is the determining factor for participation, guests must be at least five years old and weigh less than 270 pounds. All guests must fit in the harnesses. This tour is recommended for guests in good physical condition; guests must be physically fit enough to hike for 15 minutes, have the ability to climb stairs and keep both hands above their heads for several minutes. Pregnant women and guests with asthma, heart and respiratory conditions, guests with epilepsy, fear of heights or problems with balance, guests with back and/or neck problems, guests with limited mobility or guests who utilize a wheelchair will not be permitted on this tour. Guests are advised to wear loose comfortable clothing with long pants that they will not mind getting soiled. Guests who bring along a camera must be able to carry it safely around their neck, or in a fanny pack/backpack, as their hands must be free at all times to participate. There will be no way for guides to recover fallen objects; for safety's sake, guests are advised to stow their belongings on the coach.
