Port: San Juan
|
San Juan
Puerto Rico's first inhabitants were the Taino Indians, who encountered Columbus in 1493. The Spanish quickly settled, defending their territory against the Dutch and British. This is evident by the imposing fortresses of Old San Juan, namely the El Morro Castle, dominating the old section of this capital city. In 1897, Spain declared Puerto Rico an autonomous state. Spain later ceded Puerto Rico to the U.S. and residents were granted American citizenship in 1917.
The following Shore Excursions are available for this port on this cruise, and may be reserved beginning 180 days before the cruise begins.
If you love nature and horses, then don't miss this relaxing and enjoyable journey via horseback in the foothills of the El Yunque rainforest.
Depart the pier for the drive to the foothills of the El Yunque rainforest. Upon arrival, you will receive your riding instructions, sign your liability waiver and embark on a leisurely trail ride through the lush tropical foothills of the El Yunque rainforest. You will proceed along the banks of the Mameyes River, then into the heart of the legendary Puerto Rican countryside. The gentle, yet spirited Paso Fino horse you will be riding is from the exclusive Hacienda Carabali stables, where horses belonging to some of San Juan's wealthiest families are kept.
A stop will be made along the way at a beautiful river pool, where you will be invited to take a refreshing plunge in its cool, clear water. During your swim, you will feel freshwater shrimp nibble at your feet, a harmless but most unique sensation. After your swim, you will dry off and ride back to the foothills, where you will re-board your coach for the return drive to the pier.
Please note: All guests will be required to sign a liability waiver prior to commencing this tour. There is a 250-pound weight limit for anyone wishing to ride. This tour is not recommended for children under five years old, pregnant women, guests with limited mobility or guests who utilize a wheelchair. Beginner, intermediate and advanced riders are welcome. Guests are advised to wear long pants, closed-toe shoes, sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses. Guests wishing to swim should wear a swimsuit under their clothing, and bring a towel from the ship.
