Halifax, Canada-port

Welcoming travelers to an innovative and historic cityscape, Nova Scotia’s Halifax offers excellent dining and friendly maritime smiles. Tour Halifax Citadel or take a stroll along the historic waterfront or through the delightful Public Gardens, the oldest Victorian gardens in Canada. Lobster and seafood are local specialties and always tempting to the taste-buds.. The Micmac Indians, called the area ‘Chebuctook’, meaning Great Long Harbor and the city’s ideal location on one of the largest natural harbors in the world made it a strategic asset for convoys in both world wars. Scenic Dartmouth lies on the opposite shore and can be visited by crossing on the oldest saltwater ferry in Canada.

Indulge your senses with the coastal beauty of Peggy's Cove during this scenic and memorable tour of Halifax and the surrounding area.

Depart the pier with your kilted guide for a sightseeing journey through the modern city of Halifax, then along the coastal Lighthouse Route en route to Peggy's Cove, a rustic fishing village where just 60 people live year round. The power and majesty of the Atlantic Ocean comes to life in this tiny coastal village as you pass by impressive rock formations left by eroding glaciers millions of years ago.

Next, you will discover why this picturesque seaside village and its stately lighthouse have been an inspiration for artists and writers for generations during a self-guided walking tour, or a stroll with your kilted guide. As you pass through this tiny cove, you guide will explain how the cove got its name, the story of its lighthouse and the lobster fishery that serves as the backbone of the local economy. En route, you will also see different types of lobster traps and have an opportunity to touch a live lobster.

Your tour will conclude with a tribute to the people of Peggy's Cove during a visit to the DeGarthe Monument, which was carved from a massive slab of granite by local artist William DeGarthe. During your visit, some time will also be made available for you to explore the shops and galleries of Peggy's Cove at your own leisure. You can visit the historic lighthouse and you will also have an opportunity to taste Peggy's Cove's famous homemade gingerbread while overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and crashing surf.

Following your visit, you will re-board your coach for the return drive to Halifax that will travel via the seaside villages lining historic St. Margaret's Bay.

Please note: This tour includes some moderate walking, at times over uneven surfaces. The tour is available to guests who utilize a collapsible wheelchair, can make their own way on and off the coach and have a companion to assist them; however, some of the sights are not wheelchair accessible. Those with mobility concerns are cautioned to evaluate their personal level of ability and stamina. Weather appropriate clothing and flat, comfortable walking shoes are suggested. Guests should be prepared for the possibility of rain. The order of the sights viewed or visited may vary.
