Grand Turk, Turks & Caicos Islands-port

Relax into the quiet off-the-beaten path atmosphere of Grand Turk, most famous for being where John Glenn’s capsule splashed down after his trip to the moon. You’ll want to splash down a few rum punches or local beers and indulge in the delicacy that has drawn divers to the area for decades: Queen Conch. A visit to the National Museum will quench your curiosity for history as well as satisfy your desire for the perfect souvenir. Look for shells, straw trinket baskets and other handmade items.

Begin with a scenic drive along the coast and across the island to the other side. See the Governor's Beach, the local airport, and one of Grand Turk's natural Salinas that has been newly renovated to show visitors to the island how Salt is obtained in its natural form. Salt was once Grand Turk's main source of income.

Drive past the charming little city of Cockburn Town, the administrative and political capital of the Turks & Caicos Islands before reaching the Grand Turk Indigenous Horse Shelter where your tour begins. Once mounted on your horse, you will go for a leisurely walk along the beach while enjoying the view of the crystal clear Atlantic Ocean. Learn about the history of the catchment area that can be seen in the distance before your swim in the ocean with the horses. The guides will then unsaddle your mounts and prepare them for the swim. You then remount your horse, with a halter and enter the ocean for an unforgettable experience.

Afterwards, you can take a shower and relax, before being transferred back to the ship. On the return journey one can enjoy the view of the North Creek where many locals have their boats moored as it is the only hurricane shelter for yachts traveling between Nassau and Puerto Rico. If you are lucky you may catch a glimpse of the famous endangered pink flamingos while they bask in the sun in the many salinas on the island.

Please note: This tour travels along rocky and uneven terrain. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests, pregnant women or guests with heart, back, or neck ailments, or those with mobility concerns. Participants should be in good physical condition. It is recommended that you bring a towel, swim wear, sun block and Aqua Shoes with you. Wildlife sightings are not guaranteed.
