Castries, St. Lucia-port

Castries is the capital, commercial center and main cruise port of St Lucia. Founded by the French in about 1768, it changed hands in the earlier 1800’s, when the British made the town a major naval port and built fortifications on Morne Fortune, overlooking the harbor. Today, the port offers something for everyone. Bargain hunters can head over to the duty-free shops at Pointe Seraphine; Castries Waterworks Forest Reserve allows visitors a rare glimpse of rain forest flora and fauna; and, for those looking for a fun day trip, a visit to the Grand Pitons or a hike up to Fort Charlotte on Morne Fortune offer beautiful vistas and historical perspective.

From the pier, drive through the capital city of Castries while enjoying views of the market, cathedral, Derek Walcott Square and the central library. Your first stop will be Morne Fortune. Here, you can enjoy panoramic views of Castries, the northwestern coast and the sea below.

Continue your journey through Cul de Sac and Roseau banana plantations toward the fishing villages of Anse-La-Raye and Canaries, where you may see fishermen repairing nets and setting out to sea. Continue along the winding coastal road as you approach the city of Soufriere with its dramatic Pitons rising more than 2,500 feet from the sea.

Arriving in Soufriere, you'll first enjoy a guided tour at the Diamond Botanical Gardens. The Diamond Falls are consistently described as one of the natural wonders of St Lucia. This six acre, multi-award winning tourism site, is an attractive, alluring and peaceful retreat from the outside world. The Estate's gardens offer close-up views of popular local flora. Your guide then leads you up the estate driveway to present the manioc house where you receive a close-up live demonstration of the process of de-husking a coconut and drying the copra in the oven. Afterwards, you'll be treated to a taste of coconut water and jelly.

A delicious buffet lunch will be served at a this beautiful estate, where you will dine on Caribbean delicacies in old plantation ambiance. Following lunch, you'll board a comfortable catamaran for a relaxing cruise back to Castries, stopping at a tranquil cove to swim in the crystal clear waters.
