Charleston, United States-port

Founded in 1670 by a group of English aristocrats as an intended moneymaking venture, ‘Charles Towne’ swiftly boomed, exporting products from the region’s rice and cotton plantations. The Civil War started on Charleston’s very doorstep at Fort Sumter, strategically situated on an island in the harbor. Combining history and plenty of Southern charm, Charleston is a compelling place to visit. Tour the historic district by horse-drawn carriage and discover stately homes adorned with wooden shutters, ironwork balconies, leafy patios and hidden gardens. Watch Gullah weavers create sweet grass baskets and immerse yourself in this friendly city’s ante-bellum ambiance.

Charleston has an amazing history, some magnificent period architecture and its own unique culinary traditions. This charming tour succeeds in perfectly blending the three.

Joining your guide at the pier, you will commence your excursion with a guided stroll down lovely streets and lanes where you will have an up-close view of the marvelous architecture of homes built more than a century ago. Peek into the lush private gardens of this quaint old city and breathe the aroma of tea olive and Magnolia. Throughout your walking tour, which travels within the historic walled city area and includes the Old City Market, your experienced guide will weave the culinary traditions and culture of Charleston into the narrative.

Following your guided walking tour, you'll have the opportunity to learn exactly what makes low country cuisine the cornerstone of coastal South Carolina heritage at Charleston Cooks! This demonstration class is a fantastic way to learn more about the secrets of low country cuisine in a relaxed and fun atmosphere. What makes the experience even more memorable is that you will get to do this while enjoying a generous tasting of regionally based recipes and sipping a glass of wine.

Afterwards, accompanied by your guide, you'll walk back to the pier where your tour concludes.

Please note: The walking portion of this tour includes approximately 90-minutes of moderate walking and the cooking demonstration is approximately 90-minutes in duration. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests or those with mobility concerns. Weather-appropriate casual clothing and flat, comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
