Noumea

Capital of the French territory New Celedonia, Noumea played an important role in World War II, serving as the headquarters of the United States military in the Pacific. It boasts the most sunshine of any Pacific island capital, and is also the most European-influenced. Called “The Paris of the Pacific,” it features fine French dining, designer boutiques, and cosmopolitan residents. Just off the coast, the longest barrier reef in the world shelters 350 species of coral and 1,500 species of fish.

Embrace Noumea's spectacular beauty during this memorable visit to its wonderful bays, beaches, hills, and new state-of-the-art aquarium.

Depart the pier with your guide for the scenic drive through the city of Noumea, the Paris of the Pacific. Along the way, you will view the city's unique blend of old and modern architecture, and stop at panoramic lookout points for magnificent views and photo opportunities of the surrounding lagoon.

Next, you will proceed to Noumea's state-of-the-art aquarium, which features naturally-lit tanks filled with fresh water pumped from the lagoon. The aquarium houses an amazing assortment of marine life, including sea horses, coral, sea turtles, reef sharks, stingrays, and colorful tropical fish. During your 1-hour visit, you will also have an opportunity to observe a live prehistoric nautilus shell.

Following your visit, you will re-board your coach for the return drive to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves easy walking over mostly flat surfaces, and five-to-ten steps to climb. This tour is wheelchair-accessible for guests who are able to transfer into and out of the coach. Noumea's charm is derived from its unsophisticated and relaxed approach to life. Consequently, tours tend to run on a loose schedule. Guides, though knowledgeable and the best available, are not as skilled as those found in larger tourist centers. Your patience and understanding are greatly appreciated.
