Shanghai
Shanghai, situated on the banks of the Yangtze River Delta in East China, is the largest city of the People's Republic of China and the ninth largest in the world. Widely regarded as the citadel of China's modern economy, the city also serves as one of the most important cultural, commercial, financial, industrial and communications centers of China. Shanghai is also one of the world's busiest ports, and became the largest cargo port in the world in 2005.
The following Shore Excursions are available for this port on this cruise, and may be reserved beginning 180 days before the cruise begins.
Explore the architectural past of the world's fifth-largest city during this scenic full-day tour of Shanghai.
Shanghai is one of China's biggest and most cosmopolitan cities. In 5,000 years, it has grown from a tiny fishing village into the world's fifth-largest city. Its architectural diversity is especially evident in the historical European buildings along the Bund, modern high-rise buildings in Pudong, tranquil private gardens of the Old Town and modern architecture of the bustling People Square.
Depart the pier with your guide for the drive into Shanghai. Your tour will begin with a leisurely stroll along the Bund, a renovated promenade adjacent to the Old Town and the former Wall Street of Colonial China. The Bund's architecture reflects the European Art Deco styles of the time. Your next stop is the ancient Yu Garden, whose lovely Chinese garden design features delicate ponds and pavilions, along with splendid rocks and bridges. From here, you will proceed for a drive through the tree-lined avenues of the former French Concession to the Shanghai Arts and Crafts Research Institute. This spectacular mansion is highlighted by French influences, and locally-renowned as the Little White House because of its resemblance to the White House in Washington, D.C.
After lunch at the Arc Restaurant on top of Grand Theatre, you will proceed through People Square. Along the way, you will see the Grand Theatre, Shanghai Museum and Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Hall. Inside this building, you can see the ambitious plans of Shanghai urban planners, and interesting models foreshadowing the city's landscape in a few decades. Next, you will cross under the Huangpu River and through the brand new tunnel to the new area of Pudong. Over the past two decades, a forest of skyscrapers has emerged throughout the city. A visit will be made to the Jin Mao Building, China's 2nd-tallest skyscraper, for panoramic vistas of the city from the 88th-floor Observation Lounge.
Following your visit, you will re-board your coach for the return drive to the pier and ship.
Please note: This tour involves a considerable amount of walking, mainly over evenly-paved surfaces. Expect uneven walking paths at Yu Gardens.
