Boarding your coach at the pier, this tour will give you a wonderful insight into Thursday Island's people, its history, its commercial base and its culture. As you travel around the island, you will be treated to a view of many of the island's highlights. Included in your tour is a visit to the refurbished Torres Strait Museum and Green Hill Fort. The Fort was built in 1893 in response to a Russian war scare. Located on the highest part of the island, it has a large underground section with three of the original guns still in place.
Following your visit to the Fort, you will continue past the Japanese Pearl Divers Memorial at the local cemetery where 700 divers have been laid to rest.
At the conclusion of your tour, you will have the option of being dropped off in the downtown area to browse the interesting shops and art gallery where the works of many local artists are displayed, or to return to the ship. Those electing to remain in town will be responsible for making their own way back to the ship.
Please note: The sites on this tour are not wheelchair accessible and therefore, it is not considered suitable for guests who utilize a wheelchair.
