Port: Walvis Bay

Walvis Bay

Walvis Bay

Walvis Bay is a port in Namibia and the bay on which it lies. The port of Walvis Bay exchanged hands numerous times, belonging to Britain, Germany, the Union of South Africa, and South-West Africa. In 1990, South-West Africa gained independence as Namibia, but Walvis Bay remained under South African sovereignty. It was not until 1994 that sovereignty over Walvis Bay was formally transferred to Namibia.

The following Shore Excursions are available for this port on this cruise, and may be reserved beginning 180 days before the cruise begins.

Seated Tour Regent Choice

Experience the magnificent beauty of Namibia in an exciting new way during this scenic and exhilarating flight-seeing tour along the coast.

Depart the pier for the drive to the airport. Upon arrival, you will board a single-engine Cessna. Your 1.5-hour flight will commence from Walvis Bay to the Kuiseb Riverbed, the natural border for the dune formations. You will then proceed over the shifting sand dunes en route to the coast at Conception Bay. As you fly along the coast, with the Atlantic surf on one side and the Namib Dunes on the other, you will pass by colonies of Cape fur seals and the wreck of the passenger liner Eduard Bohlen. Stranded in 1909, she lies 820 feet offshore. Further along the coast, you will see another shipwreck, the Shaunee, which was stranded in 1976.

Next, you will reach Sandwich Harbour, an internationally recognized wetland protected by the RAMSAR Convention. The highest recorded density of lesser and greater flamingoes was recorded here at low tide, with 7,791 birds per 0.62 miles. As you approach Walvis Bay from the south, you will see Namibia's coastal salt mines, which attract thousands of birds. Your flight will conclude back at Walvis Bay. Namibia's major harbor town and a former enclave to South Africa, Walvis Bay was incorporated into Namibia on March 1, 1994.

Following your flight-seeing tour, you will rejoin your coach for the return drive to the pier.

Please note: The total flight duration is approximately 1.5 hours. Although the aircraft will not make any touchdowns, photo opportunities from the air abound. This tour is not recommended for guests with limited mobility or guests who utilize a wheelchair. There are no restrooms on board the plane. The plane is not air-conditioned.
