Zanzibar
Zanzibar, sometimes referred to as the “Spice Islands,” is the name for an archipelago in the Indian Ocean off the coast of East Africa, which is part of Tanzania. The capital of Zanzibar, located on the island of Unguja, is Zanzibar City. The city's old quarter, known as Stone Town, is a World Heritage Site. Zanzibar's main industries are spices, raffia, and tourism. Zanzibar is a conservative, Sunni Muslim society. Its history was influenced by the Persians, Arabs, Indians, Portuguese, British and the African mainland.
The following Shore Excursions are available for this port on this cruise, and may be reserved beginning 180 days before the cruise begins.
Explore Zanzibar's splendid beaches and marine life during this memorable dhow boat and snorkeling adventure at the Pange Sandbank.
Depart the pier for the brief drive to the Serena Inn Hotel. Upon arrival, you will receive your safety and tour instructions, embark your traditional wooden dhow boat and begin the 25-minute ride to the Pange Sandbank. Here, you can relax on the sandbank with a fresh coconut drink and some snacks, or participate in a guided snorkeling session on a nearby reef. After a seafood lunch buffet, coffee and Amarula liqueur will be served, followed by some additional time to swim or relax on the beach.
At the conclusion of your visit, you will embark your dhow boat, return to the Serena Inn Hotel and re-board your coach for the return drive to the pier.
Please note: Once the dhow boat arrives at the sandbank, guests must be able to disembark via a small ladder and wade ashore. Expect water to be up to knee-level. Lunch will be served under a canvas tent. You will spend a total of approximately 1 hour on the dhow boat; seating is on wooden benches. There is limited shade on the dhow. Guests are encouraged to wear a swimsuit under a cover-up, water shoes, sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses, and bring a towel from the ship.
