Port: Nha Trang

Nha Trang

Nha Trang

Nha Trang is situated in Vietnam's southern Champa Kingdom along the Song Cai River. In ancient times, this southern region was once a peaceful Champa settlement. It was attacked by the Vietnamese at the end of the 15th century, though it remained under Champa control until the mid 17th century when the Nguyen Lords of Hue took possession. From the city of Nha Trang, several ancient Cham Towers can be visited, each revealing details of the unique culture of the Chams.

Light Activity

Enjoy an in-depth look at rural life in Vietnam during this half-day visit to the farms, homes, schools and villages that dot the green countryside.

Depart the pier for the scenic drive about 9 miles from downtown Nha Trang to the green countryside marked by vast rice fields, fruit gardens and majestic mountains on the horizon. Upon arrival, you will see buffaloes eating grass, ducks feeding on rice grains and farmers toiling in the field.

A stop will be made at a local temple dedicated to the god believed to bestow good luck on the villagers. Many generations of local ancestors are worshipped here, and the altar is decorated with the candles and incense that symbolize the universe. You will then drive along a small village road to enjoy wonderful photo opportunities of the rice fields, mountains, buffaloes and more.

Next, you will visit a farmer's house to view how they live, raise domestic animals, cook food, get water from the well, plant fruit, and worship their ancestors. You will also see unusual tropical trees growing in the garden. From here, a visit to a local kindergarten will be made (weekdays only). After receiving a warm welcome, the children will sing for you, and you can offer them some candy for their efforts. A stop will also be made at a local market, if they are still open late. Inside the village, a visit will also be made to visit a local family weaving floor mats in sedge, or baskets in banana leaves. You will then stop at a local coffee shop to enjoy a coconut drink, and sample some locally-grown tropical fruit before continuing on to visit a local pagoda. The monks will welcome you, and show you how they live, worship Buddha and train themselves in Buddhist principles.

Your tour concludes with a visit to a local rice paper workshop, where locals also make rice cakes to sell to locals for their breakfast. Afterward, you will rejoin your coach for the return drive to the pier and ship.
