Explore Zanzibar's storied past during this scenic and informative walking tour of the Stone Town.
Depart the pier for the drive to the City Market, or Sultana Market. Upon arrival, you will experience the hustle and bustle of morning activities. You will also see and smell the tropical fruit and freshly ground spices for sale.
From here, you will proceed to the Anglican Church. Built in 1874 by Bishop Steer on the site of the Great Slave Market, the Anglican Church was once the hub of slave trade in East Africa. At its peak, up to 60,000 slaves passed through the market each year. During your guided tour, you will visit the underground chambers where slaves were once held before being sold on the market. You will then drive to the House of Wonders National Museum, a former ceremonial palace in which the relics of the Sultans and early explorers such as Dr. David Livingstone are displayed.
From the Old Fort, you will then be escorted on a walking tour through narrow streets of Stone Town. Along the way, you will pass the Roman Catholic church, see some extraordinary Zanzibar doors and catch a glimpse of typical Zanzibar life.
Please note: This tour involves approximately 3 hours of easy walking, and about 100 steps. Guests are encouraged to wear proper attire covering the shoulders prior to entering the churches.
