When Columbus discovered Antigua in 1493, he encountered the unfriendly Carib Indians. Columbus named the island Santa Maria de Antigua, in honor of a church in Spain. For many years, both the Spanish and French were unable to settle on the island due to the fierce nature of the Caribs. But in 1632, the British took control of this island, developing the sugarcane industry with the use of slaves imported from Africa. In 1981 Antigua was granted independence anb became a British commonwealth.

Explore the pristine natural beauty of Antigua during this picturesque off-road journey along the island's south and west coasts.

Depart the pier in a fully-equipped off-road vehicle for the drive to the west coast of Antigua. During this tour, you will visit exquisite locales that are inaccessible by tour buses and can only be reached via off-road vehicles. Your route will take you through the picturesque village of Bendals, past the scenic valley of Body Pond and on to Fig Tree Drive, home of Antigua's rainforest. Along the way, you will see fresh ripe mangoes and pineapple growing wild alongside the road.

Upon reaching the end of the rainforest, you will begin your tour of the south coast. Here, you will discover the fragile ecosystem of the mangrove plant. Your tour will conclude with a stop at a beautiful beach, and an opportunity to take a refreshing dip in the Caribbean Sea.

Following your visit, you will re-board your off-road vehicle and proceed past more of Antigua's scenic villages during the return drive to the pier.

Please note: This tour is only recommended for active guests in good physical condition. As this tour involves travel over bumpy surfaces, guests with back and/or neck problems or guests who may be pregnant are discouraged from participating. This tour is not recommended for guests with limited mobility or guests who utilize a wheelchair. Guests are advised to wear a swimsuit under a cover-up, flat, comfortable shoes, sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses, and bring a towel from the ship.
