Enjoy a glimpse of some of the most notable sights on this tour that gives an overview of the city.

Leaving by coach from the pier, you will commence your exploration of this mostly undiscovered destination. Having a natural deep-water harbor, over the centuries Trincomalee has attracted great seafarers such as Marco Polo, Ptolemy and during ancient times, the sea traders from China and East Asia. Today, the area's beautiful beaches and azure waters that offer great surfing, scuba diving, fishing and whale watching, has it fast becoming a popular vacation destination.

One of your first stops will be at the Tirukonesvaram Kovil Temple, the oldest Hindu Temple in Sri Lanka which attracts pilgrims from all areas of India. The shrine itself was demolished in 1622 by the Portugese, who called it the Temple of a Thousand Columns. They then used the temple's materials to fortify areas of the city. Luckily, some of the wonderful art work from the demolished temple were salvaged and kept in the Lisbon Museum, including the stone inscription by Kulakottan. Today's temple was rebuilt over the site of the original temple and restoration work was completed in the 1960's.

You will also visit the Dutch Fort, Fort Fredrick. Built in 1623 by the Portuguese, it was captured in 1639 by the Dutch. Following that, it went through several phases of being dismantled and then rebuilt and was finally attacked and captured by the French in 1672. Trincomalee also is home to several Buddhist historical sites and a visit to a Buddhist temple is also planned.

Following your stops, you will be treated to a panoramic tour of the city before returning to the pier where your tour concludes.

Please note: This tour includes approximately 75-minutes of moderate walking. There are some steps and uneven ground to negotiate at the stops and the tour may not be suitable for wheelchair guests. Those guests with mobility concerns are cautioned to evaluate their personal level of stamina and ability. Light cotton clothing; sun cap; sunglasses, and flat, comfortable walking shoes are suggested. Hats and shoes must be removed before entering the temples and it is recommended that guests have thick socks with them as the pavement will be hot. Conservative attire is required to enter the temples and sleeves should extend to the elbow. Shorts and short skirts or dresses are not permitted.
