Highlights of Semarang

This tour provides a wonderful opportunity to see some of Semarang's most popular attractions while allowing time to shop for locally crafted souvenirs. Starting from the pier, you will first visit Semarang Old City with stop a at the beautiful Greja Blenduk, the oldest church in central Java, dating back to 1753. Built in the shape of a Greek cross, the interior of this imposing protestant Dutch church is dominated by an enormous baroque organ and pulpit. Although the organ was never able to be restored and is no longer working, it stands as a quiet reminder of the Church's glorious past.
Other sites that you will visit are Sam Poo Kong, a unique Chinese Muslim Temple, representing both religions. The imposing temple was built in honour of the Muslim Eunuch Admiral Chen Ho of the Ming Dynasty. He led the Chinese fleets during their forays throughout Asia and Java in the 15th century. The temple is well known now as the Building of Stone is because it shaped like a large stone cave located amongst the hill.
Continue on to Central Java Grand Mosque which is located in Gajah Raya Street, Semarang, Central Java, was opened 11 November 2006 and has now become a Moslem pride since the world has known of its existence.
Next you will continue to Vihara Mahavira passing Simpang square, Tugu Muda Monument (Youth Monument): a candle-shape monument commemorating Semarang's five days battle against the Japanese military in October 1945. Visit Vihara Mahavira, while enjoying the local snack before returning to the harbour where you will rejoin the ship.
