This full-day tour will introduce you to Shanghai, the largest metropolis in China with a population of over 17 million. A city in rapid transition, Shanghai is a mosaic of dynamic modern skyscrapers, mixed with stately stone buildings representing architectural styles from a bygone era. Shanghai is brassy, bold and beautiful, all at once.
Departing the pier, you will drive across the Huangpu River to the Pudong New District, for photo stops at the futuristic Oriental Pearl TV Tower, the Shanghai World Finance Center and the incredible Jin Mao Building. Previously the tallest building in Shanghai, the architects of the Jin Mao Building combined elements of traditional Chinese architecture with a gothic influence to produce this amazingly modern building. It was surpassed by the Shanghai World Finance Center as the tallest building in late 2008. Afterwards, enjoy a short walk on the Riverside Boulevard for a sweeping view of the Bund and its many styled buildings.
Your next stop will be Old Town, the vibrant marketplace surrounding the 16th century Yu Yuan Gardens. Your guided walking tour will explore the crowded, narrow alleys of the Old Town, as well as the classic Ming Dynasty Yu Yuan Garden featuring exquisite rockeries, dragon walls and differently shaped pavilions and towers. You will enjoy a traditional Chinese-style lunch, before visiting the Jade Buddha Temple, famed for its exquisite and priceless white jade Buddha, brought from Burma in the late 19th century by a Chinese monk. The working temple also houses large numbers of ancient carvings, paintings and precious Buddhist cultural relics.
Your final stop will be the renowned Shanghai Museum, housing over 110,000 historical objects and 430,000 reference pieces. Its collection of bronze-ware from Shang and Zhou Dynasties, dating back as far as 3,500 years, enjoys international fame. You will have time to explore the outstanding museum on your own, enjoying the well laid out displays of ceramics, calligraphy, paintings, sculptures, furniture, jade, coins and minority nationalities' art.
You will return to the ship following your daylong exploration of Shanghai.
