Ko Samui, Thailand-port

Koh Samui is Thailand's third largest island. Surrounded by eighty smaller islands, this stunning, natural beauty has been relatively undiscovered until recent years. Rumor claims that in 1971 the first tourists to set foot on Koh Samui were hippies who arrived by way of a coconut boat from Bangkok. While Koh Samui still exports up to 2 million coconuts to Bangkok every month, recent urban developments include a no-frills airport and an ostentatious Reggae bar.

    Duration: 4 1/2 hours
    Tour Code: kos-006

Experience the tropical beauty and traditions of Ko Samui during this picturesque sightseeing tour of the island.

After tendering ashore, depart the pier for a scenic coastal drive past exquisite beaches and lush coconut plantations en route to Ko Samui, which is located off the northern shore of Samui on a small rocky island accessible by a causeway. Your first stop will be an entertaining monkey show to learn how locals use monkeys to pick ripe coconuts. This centuries-old tradition certainly comes in handy as Ko Samui, the Island of Coconuts, produces over three million coconuts per month.

Next, you will continue on for a visit to the Kunaram Temple. During your visit to this small, tranquil monastery, you will view the body of Samui's most famous mummified monk, Loung Poh Deang. When he died more than 20 years ago, Loung Poh Deang was seated in the meditation position. Amazingly, he is still seated in that position, and his body shows few signs of any major decay.

From here, you will proceed to the Big Buddha Temple, or Wat Pha Yai. The temple features a 36-foot golden statue perched atop a wide staircase decorated with dragons. The statue of Buddha is visible from several miles away, and creates an impressive silhouette against the sea and sky behind it. Surrounding the Buddha, you will find a number of meditation huts, or kutis, along with several striking golden statues and shops catering to the needs of visitors.

Leaving the Big Buddha Temple, you will drive to the Plai Leam Temple, one of Ko Samui's most colorful temples. It features an 18-arm statue of the Goddess of Mercy, or Guam Im, seated in the middle of the lake. After a photo stop and refreshments at a scenic viewpoint overlooking Chaweng Beach, you will rejoin your coach for the return drive to the pier. Upon arrival, you will tender back to the ship.

Please note: Tour buses and guides will be brought over from the mainland in order to provide the best service and quality possible. This tour involves a moderate amount of walking. Lightweight clothing and comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Proper attire is required for the temple visit: no cut-offs, sleeveless shirts, etc. will be permitted inside.
