Anos Syros & Scenic Coastal Drive
Duration: 3 1/2 hours
Tour Code: sys-002
Discover the many facets of Syros by walking through the medieval village of Ano Syros, driving past attractive coastal villages and visiting a candy factory.
Depart from the pier in Hermoupolis and enjoy a brief drive to the hillside village of Ano Syros, which the Venetians built in the 13th century. Its medieval atmosphere has been beautifully preserved, as you will see during a guided walking tour that takes you along its stone stairways and down narrow pedestrian-only streets. While the Cathedral of St. George is certainly an icon of Ano Syros, there is plenty more to admire in this predominately Catholic village, including monasteries and the shops and galleries in the Piatsa commercial district.
Re-boarding your coach, you will next drive south along the picturesque coast of Syros, whose name is derived from an ancient Phoenician word meaning “rocky.” It’s one classic village after another, until reaching laid-back Finikas, where you will stop for photos along the beach. You will also drop by a candy factory renowned for its traditional “loukoumi” nougat. These chewy candies are dusted in powdered sugar and often flavored with lemon, honey and walnuts, or with coconut and ouzo.
Back in Hermoupolis, you’ll visit the Church of the Assumption, best known for its religious painting by El Greco. Created around 1567, when El Greco was in his mid-20s, it is the first surviving work of the famed Greek artist that bears his signature, which can be seen at the base of the candelabrum. After viewing the icon, you will walk back to the pier where your tour concludes.
Please note: This tour includes approximately 90-minutes of moderate walking/standing and there are some steps to negotiate. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests and may not be suitable for those guests with mobility concerns who are cautioned to carefully evaluate their personal level of stamina and ability. Weather appropriate clothing; sun cap; sunglasses; a bottle of water from the ship; and flat, comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
