Richards Bay, South Africa-port

Richards Bay is one of South Africa’s largest harbors, and is the tourist’s gateway to Zululand, once the mightiest of the sub-Saharan African Kingdoms. Richards Bay began its life as a makeshift harbor, set up by Sir Fredererick Richards, after whom it is named, during the Anglo-Boer War of 1880-81. Richards Bay has some of the most spectacular wetland scenery and pristine beaches on the north coast of KwaZulu Natal. Join us as we explore the land of King Shaka, or embark on an unforgettable safari to Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve.

Relive the history of King Shaka, King of the Zulus, during this unique and informative visit to the tribal village of Shakaland.

Depart the pier for the drive through Empangeni en route to Shakaland, the location where the motion picture Shaka Zulu was filmed. Upon arrival, you will be met by a Zulu guide and served welcome refreshments. You will then be invited to re-live the excitement and romance of the days of King Shaka, King of the Zulus.

During your walking tour through the village, you will see a variety of displays that include Zulu women creating beadwork, weaving mats, sculpting pottery, baking bread, and brewing Zulu beer. The Zulu men will show you how to make a spear and shield, and build a Zulu beehive-styled grass hut. You will also be invited into the Chief's hut to observe Zulu dancers performing rhythmic drum dances, and tribal members recreating a ritual by the traditional healer, or sangoma. This tour will also include a short audio-visual presentation and some time to be spent at your leisure browsing the curio shops.

Following your visit, you will proceed for a traditional Zulu buffet lunch at Kwabonamanzi restaurant overlooking the Umhlatuze Lake.

Please note: This is a "living museum". This tour involves walking over reasonably level gravel surfaces at the Zulu village and kraal, which can be a bit muddy after heavy rains. However, some of the pathways are paved, and there are no steps to negotiate. As a result, guests with limited mobility or guests in wheelchairs can manage this tour with the assistance of a traveling companion. It is customary for unmarried Zulu women to go topless. The drive from the pier to Shakaland is approximately 1.5 hours in each direction. Guests are expected to tip the Zulu dancers for taking their photographs or filming them. Order of sites visted may vary.
