TAJ MAHAL EXPERIENCE
After an early breakfast on board, depart the pier in Mumbai and drive through the city en route to the airport. With a population exceeding 18 million, this one time group of low lying mud flats is now India's economic power base and her most industrialized city, bustling with activity of incredible diversity and complexity, her color and elegance, her wealth corresponding with her historic struggle against poverty. Certain affluent areas give Bombay an air of mini-Manhattan! The most admirable features of Bombay's cityscape are the Gothic revival buildings raised in the last century after its original fortifications were removed. Indeed it is because of these buildings that Bombay is often cited as a `unique Victorian city'.
On arrival at the airport, guests receive boarding passes and proceed through security before boarding the flight to Delhi. Refreshments and snacks are served `aloft'.
On arrival into Delhi, enjoy a scenic drive to Agra via the new Yamuna Expressway with vistas of India's vast rural farming countryside. Along the way, stop at the Jaypee Greens Golf Course Resort for a buffet lunch along with wine, beer soft drinks and mineral water.
Agra, the city of Taj Mahal was one of the grand cities of South Asia. With the arrival of the Mughals in 1526 led by Babur, Agra entered a completely new era during the reign of emperors Akbar, Jehangir and Shah Jahan. Akbar made it a great center for learning, art, commerce and culture. Its cosmopolitan bazaars and its strategic location on the river Jamuna, was altogether a worthier setting for the focus of an empire.
Arrive at your hotel in Agra in the evening and check-in.
In the evening, enjoy the classical dance form of Kathak in the ballroom, along with wine, beer and soft drinks. A buffet dinner follows the dance performance. This Mughal Court dance arose from the fusion of Hindu and Muslim cultures during the Mughal era, characterized by rhythmic footwork, spectacular spins, mime and gestures that are a dramatic representation of themes from Persian poetry synthesized with Hindu mythology.
Note: The Taj Mahal is not open on Fridays
Discover the monumental Taj Mahal at dawn. Tea, Coffee, juices and rolls are served in the lobby, prior to departing for the Taj.
The Taj Mahal, with its incredible lacy white grandeur is perhaps the most perfect architectural monument in the world. In memory of his wife, the great Mughal emperor Shah Jehan planned this most extravagant and incomparable monument built for love. Amazingly graceful from any angle, it is the close up details, which are really astounding.
Return to the hotel for breakfast.
A) 10:00 - 12:30 p.m. Visit the Agra Fort, a World Heritage Site credited to Emperor Akbar, India's great visionary. His sons and theirs added to this imposing structure situated by the banks of the Yamuna River. The astonishing palaces, mosques and audience halls contained within its massive walls of red sandstone became once more a monumental mission of the Mughal empire embellished by the artistic fusion of Islamic and Hindu tradition.
B) 10:00-12:30 pm Visit the Tomb of Itmad-Ud-Daulah in the old city, the first Mughal structure pioneering the extensive use of `pietra dura', the inlay work of marble, so characteristic of the Taj Mahal. This mausoleum is small and squat when compared to the Taj, but the more human scale has its own attraction, and the skillfully patterned surface of the tomb is exquisite.
