It’s one glorious icon after another on this Tokyo-based tour that visits majestic Mt. Fuji, modern marvels such as Tokyo Tower, and several ancient shrines and temples in the surrounding cities.

    Day 1 – March 8, 2015

Upon arriving at the Narita International Airport, you will transfer to the ANA Intercontinental Hotel Tokyo where you will spend a relaxing evening. Every effort will be made for your room to be available before the 2:00PM check-in, but it can’t be guaranteed.

The remainder of the day and meals are at your leisure.

    Day 2 – March 9, 2015

Following breakfast at your hotel, you will drive south to the city of Kamakura, where you will behold the 750-year-old Great Buddha bronze statue, the centerpiece of the Kotokuin Temple. Cast by order of Minamoto Yoritomo, the first shogun of Kamakura, this magnificent piece rises to a height of 38 feet, making it the second tallest bronze Buddha in Japan; the highest being in Nara.

Another landmark that Yoritomo influenced is the nearby Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine, the spiritual heart of Kamakura. Originally built in 1063, the shrine was moved to its present site about 100 years later by Yoritomo’s order. It was then enlarged. To reach the shrine and its beautiful grounds, you will walk through a cherry tree-lined path that stretches from the beach at the other end.

Following lunch at a local restaurant, you will drive to Yokohama to meander through serene Sankeien Garden. Designed by a wealthy silk merchant, the garden opened in 1904 and provides a wonderful respite from the bustle of modern Yokohama. The historic buildings on the grounds were brought from other cities across Japan.

Later in the afternoon, you will return to your hotel to freshen up before heading out for a Japanese-style BBQ dinner. Afterwards, you will return to the hotel for the evening.

    Day 3 – March 10, 2015

Following breakfast at the hotel, you will drive to the fifth station of Mt. Fuji, which is approximately halfway up. The highest mountain in Japan, Mt. Fuji is revered for its symmetry and serenity. In the winter, the national symbol of “Fuji-san” is covered in snow; in the summer it stands as a symbol of vitality and energy. From the fifth station, you will have extraordinary views of the mountain’s magnificence and awe-inspiring surrounding terrain.

Continuing on, you will drive to Hakone and board an 18-passenger aerial gondola, known as a ropeway, for a spectacular ride over the Owakudani Valley. En route, you will be awestruck by the breathtaking views of the Hakone Park and Owakudani Valley’s boiling and smoking thermal springs.

In time, you will be transferred to Lake Ashi, where you will board a unique, Viking-style boat and cruise the placid waters. Along the way, the guide will elaborate on the significance of sights such as the forest-clad mountain slopes and the reflection of Fuji’s majestic cone in the lake. Following the lake cruise, you will re-board your coach and return to Tokyo. The remainder of the day is yours to enjoy as you please, with dinner on your own.

NOTE: Access to Mt. Fuji 5th Station depends on the weather. If it is not accessible, you will visit the highest elevation point possible as well as the Mt. Fuji Visitor Centre.

    Day 4 – March 11, 2015

After breakfast at the hotel, you will drive to the Meiji Shrine, which is dedicated to the Emperor Meiji, the father of modern Japan. The beautiful shrine stands in a dense forest glade at the very heart of Tokyo, and its setting symbolizes the separation of the spiritual from the worldly. You will enter the shrine through twin 40-feet tall Torii gates, among the largest in Japan.

Next proceed to the iconic Tokyo Tower, Japan’s second-tallest self-supporting steel tower, which closely resembles the Eiffel Tower. The Tokyo Tower was completed in 1958 as a symbol for Japan’s rebirth as a major economic power and serves as a radio broadcast antenna. From the 492-foot-high Grand Observation platform, you will enjoy a panoramic view of Tokyo. If the weather permits, you may even see Mount Fuji in the distance.

Then, following lunch, it’s on to Asakusa Senso-ji Temple, which was founded in the early 7th century, making it the oldest temple in the Tokyo. You will enter through the Nitenmon or Kaminarimon Gate, which is usually adorned with a huge red paper lantern, if the weather is good. Later, you will stroll down Nakamise-dori, the “Street of Inside Shops,” an alley lined with vendors selling traditional foods and crafts. Afterwards, you will drive to the pier and embark the ship to begin your cruise.
