    Duration: 5 hours
    Tour Code: alc-003

Enjoy discovering the popular tourist town of Guadalest on this tour that takes you to this ancient military stronghold that sits perched at the top of a granite mountain.

Your tour begins with a scenic 90-minute drive that takes you past picturesque villages such as La Nucia, Polop de la Marina and Callosa d´Ensarria, all of them surrounded by a landscape that is the most beautiful in the region. Dedicated to agriculture, you will see an abundance of orange trees, avocados and nisperos.

Arriving at Guadalest, you will find one of the most emblematic tourist images of the Costa Blanca, which is undoubtedly, the picture-postcard site of the free-standing elegant bell tower and the tunnel that provides access to the old center of Castell de Guadalest. Both are found nestled in a dramatic granite mountaintop setting that leaves a lasting impression. Leaving your coach behind, you will set-off with your guide on a guided walk through the village streets. The old urban center of the town is located on the top of an outcrop, which is only accessed via a tunnel hollowed into the side of the rock. The area at the top of the rock includes the bell tower, Saint Josep Castle - where the current cemetery is located, and the recently restored Orduña House which you will visit.

The Orduña House was built after the great earthquake that demolished much of the original housing in Guadalest. One half of the house is supported by the rock while the other half occupies areas over the chapels of the adjoining church. The house is constructed of timber, plaster and stone, with four levels and an attic that is reached by several small stairways. The ground floor consists of a large reception area, wine-vault, kitchen, dining room, pantries, yards, horse-stables and barn. The remaining levels are occupied by chambers and their private quarters. The library is perhaps the most interesting feature of the house, containing a total of 1265 volumes. The catalogue of the "Ancient Books" (1500-1800) consists of 589 entries. As can be seen from the book covers, the majority of the books were acquired by the lawyer Don Francisco de Paula Orduña.

On entering the state rooms, you are able to see a staircase with a font on the right hand side. This staircase leads to a private gallery, which the Orduña family used to occupy in the church, a privilege bestowed upon them by the Archbishops of Valencia.

Following your visit to Orduña House, you will have free time to further explore the village on your own before it's time to rejoin your coach for the return journey to Alicante

Please note: This tour includes approximately 90-minutes of moderate walking/standing, plus any walking at the guests' discretion during free time. There are steps and steep cobblestone inclines to negotiate during the tour. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests and those guests with mobility concerns are cautioned to evaluate their personal level of stamina and ability. Weather appropriate clothing; a hat; sunglasses and flat, comfortable walking shoes are suggested. The order of the sites viewed or visited may vary.
