Yangon (Burma), Burma-port

Exotic Yangon was founded as Dagon in the 500's by the Mon, who dominated the lower portions of present-day Myanmar. Yangon harbors the most sacred site in the country, the magnificent Scwedagon Pagoda with its amazing complex of pavilions and shrines. Nearby is the colossal reclining Buddha, almost as large as the famous statue in the town of Bago. As a former British Colony, view many fine examples of colonial architecture including the famous Strand Hotel.

This evening exploration of Yangon showcases its fabulous and famed jewel-studded Shwedagon Pagoda, which lords over the city from atop Singuttara Hill.

Departing from the pier by coach, you will commence a drive around lush Yangon, known as the "Garden City of the East." Architectural highlights along the way include the traditional tiered roof City Hall, Karaweik Royal Barge, the ancient Thanlyin area, and ornate Sule Pagoda. Still, few sights compare with the mesmerizing Shwedagon Pagoda.

Its glistening dome is covered with thousands of priceless gold plates, rubies, sapphires and other precious gems, and a single 76-carat diamond crowns the tip. Shwedagon and the glorious stupas, shrines and sculptures that surround it sprawl over 12 acres and include architectural gems such as a replica of the Mahabodhi Temple, where Buddha attained enlightenment, and the Hall of Wizards, devoted to practitioners of the occult arts. While the history of Shwedagon is shrouded in mystery, the pagoda is without a doubt the most revered pagoda in the region. You can't help but be awed by its magnificence.

Following a visit of approximately 90-minutes, you will rejoin your coach and travel to verdant People's Park, which offers a view of the pagoda from a different perspective. It's an excellent place to reflect on the beauty of Shwedagon and take panoramic photos of the city below before returning to the ship.

Please note: This tour includes approximately 90-minutes of moderate walking/standing as well as numerous steps to negotiate at Shwedagon. The tour is available to wheelchair guests who have a collapsible wheelchair, are able to make their own way on and off the coach and have a companion to assist them. Those with mobility concerns are cautioned to evaluate their personal level of stamina and ability. Conservative attire is required and shoulders and knees must be covered. Flat, comfortable walking shoes are recommended. When entering places of worship, visitors must remove their shoes and socks.
