Honningsvåg, Norway-port

The world’s northernmost village, Honningsvag is the gateway to the North Cape. It is a completely modern fishing harbor set in a land of forests, fjord waters, and crashing waterfalls. The Cape is 20 miles from Honningsvag across a stark and rocky tundra landscape, where large herds of reindeer graze on sparse grasses in the summer. This desolate terrain dotted with small lakes is the only area in Norway where landscape and vegetation are genuinely arctic in character.

Drive an All-Terrain Vehicle into the hauntingly barren landscape in the hills surrounding Honningsvag and enjoy a coffee break in a tent with some of the indigenous Sami people.

After a short walk from the pier, accompanied by a guide, you will arrive at an ATV station for a brief orientation. There, you will be given a helmet, gloves and thermo suit to wear while riding your two-person All Terrain Vehicle. It’s easy to operate an ATV and to help you get acclimated; the drive begins at a leisurely pace through the streets of Honningsvag.

Located on the rather large island of Mageroya in the extreme northern reaches of Norway, Honningsvag is a small, tight-knit fishing community with colorful hillside homes overlooking the harbor and Barents Sea. After riding around town, you will drive onto a gravel road that leads to Nato Mountain. During stops along the way, the guide will explain the more fascinating aspects of the area’s history and wildlife.

While the tundra-covered landscape is rather barren, it is wonderfully dramatic. Steep cliffs hug the shore and mountains rise in the interior, where reindeer roam freely. Archaeologists have found evidence of settlements here dating back more than 10,000 years.

The Sami are the indigenous tribe on Mageroya, and you will have the opportunity to witness their traditional lifestyle while enjoying coffee brewed over an open fire in a Sami tent. Afterward, you will drive back to the ATV station and then walk to the pier.

Please note: This tour has limited walking; however, the tour is not available to wheelchair guests, those with mobility concerns, heart conditions, back or neck injuries, or pregnant women. Participants should be in good physical condition. Layered clothing to include a water/windproof jacket; sun cap; sun glasses; and flat, closed-toe shoes are recommended. The approximately 90-minutes of ATV driving time will be over both the main road in traffic, as well as off-road and a valid driver’s license is required. The local operator requires that all guests sign a waiver before being allowed to participate in the tour. In the event of an accident, guests are responsible for any damage to the ATV up to 10,000 Norwegian Krone(approximately $1,645.00 USD).
