Hellesylt, Norway-port

One of the highlights of the fjordlands, this hamlet sits quietly at the head of the beautiful Synnylvsfjord. Near the village, the gorgeous Hellesylt Waterfall plunges over the granite face of the fjord, cascading in thousands of feet of rainbows and foam. This majestic area, along with its breathtaking glaciers and mountain lakes, inspired Henrik Ibsen’s drama Brand. The town is a starting point for trips to Geiranger, considered Norway’s most beautiful fjord.

For more than 100 years the Geirangerfjord, considered by many the world's most beautiful fjord, has been visited by people from around the world. For hundreds of years, the mode of transportation here was the stalwart and powerful "fjordingen" (fjord horse). Today, the magnificent beauty of this area is possible via scenic roadways.

Arriving ashore via tender, you will board your coach and begin your tour in Hellesylt, a small but important village. Almost immediately after setting off, you will be able to see the Hellesylt Waterfall. Leaving the village behind, the road will take you through scenic farmland that is typical for western Norway, in between towering mountains and lakes, including Lake Hornindalsvatn which is the deepest lake in Europe at 1670 ft. and has an abundant trout population.

Continue along the lake towards Nordfjord to the village of Stryn, and up the Stryn Valley. The River Styrn has a beautiful emerald color, created by the melted ice from Jostedalen Glacier that can be glimpsed in the distance. This river is one of the best salmon rivers in Norway and the largest salmon ever caught in the river weighed 64 pounds. Proceed to climb the narrow valley to the Stryn Mountains. The road is a masterpiece of engineering, built for horse-drawn vehicles and opened in 1895.

A stop will be made for lunch at Hotel Alexandra and following a relaxing lunch you'll re-board your coach and proceed up the winding mountain road which offers an ever-changing kaleidoscope of mountain farms, waterfalls, lakes and streams. From Lake Djupvatn you will make your way along the hairpin road to the summit of Mount Dalsnibba. From this incredible location you are afforded a spectacular view of Geirangerfjord far below and the magnificent mountain peaks.

Your return to Geiranger includes a photo stop at the Flvdalsjuvet view point before arriving back at the pier.

Please note: This tour includes a limited amount of walking; however, the sites on this tour are not wheelchair accessible and therefore, it is not considered suitable for guests who utilize a wheelchair. Those guests with mobility concerns are cautioned to evaluate their personal level of stamina and ability. Warm, weather appropriate layered clothing and flat comfortable walking shoes are suggested.
