Trondheim, Norway-port

Norway’s history is written in the buildings and monuments of Norway’s first capital and third largest city, Trondheim. The Sagas tell us how King Olav Tryggvason of Viking fame founded the city on this ice-free fjord in 997, mesmerized by the winding Nidelva River and lovely forested hills. The timbered architecture of the beautiful 11th-century Nidaros Cathedral is actually built over the tomb of St. Olav, and even today, Norwegian kings are crowned within its massive nave.

Explore the history and charm of Trondheim, founded in 997 AD, during this half-day tour that includes walking through Bakklandet.

Presently the third largest city in Norway, Trondheim was the first capital of the country and is still where the new kings and queens receive their ceremonial blessing. The city center is situated by the Trondheimsfjord, around the bends at the mouth of the River Nidelva, and is a blend of old and new. Arriving at the Kristiansten Fortress you'll be able to enjoy a nice view of the city center and from here, will continue on a guided walk downhill through Bakklandet.

The Bakklandet area is made up of small wooden houses and buildings built by sailors, fishermen and laborers. The charming surroundings close to the city center have been lovingly restored, giving the area a new life including small cafés and shops. Among the curiosities in the area are special bicycle lifts, called Trampe, up the steep Brubakken Hill. The tour continues on foot across the wooden Old City Bridge, where you can see views of the old wharves along the Nidelva River, to Nidaros Cathedral for an exterior visit. The Cathedral is built on the gravesite of Norway's patron Saint, St. Olav, and was an important destination for pilgrims before the Reformation. You will have an opportunity to explore the area on your own, including browsing the Cathedral area, Archbishops Palace, and the Cathedral itself before re-joining your coach for the return transfer to the pier.

Please note: This tour includes approximately 1 3/4 hours of walking - mostly over flat surfaces and downhill. Due to the nature of the tour, it may not be suitable for guests who utilize a wheelchair and those with mobility concerns are cautioned to evaluate their personal level of stamina and ability. Casual clothing, caps and comfortable walking shoes are suggested. Order of sites visited may vary.
