Waterford, Ireland-port

Nestled by the banks of the River Suir, Waterford is Ireland’s oldest city, dating back to Viking times. Its impressive medieval city walls, cobbled, winding streets and colorful waterfront lend the town a charming feel. Reginald's Tower is Waterford's best known landmark. The building has been described as the oldest tower of mortared stone in Europe and today houses the city’s Maritime and Civic Museum. Other attraction worth a visit are the City Hall, magnificently restored, and housing the Municipal Art Collection, and the Heritage Museum with its fine collection of Viking and Medieval artifacts. Of course no trip to Waterford would be complete without a visit to the world renowned Waterford Crystal factory. Each piece represents the culmination of light, heat and the skill of master craftsmen. The craftsmen transform glowing balls of crystal into elegant shapes using their artistic instinct, their breath and traditional tools. The perfect place to bring back a treasured memento of your cruise.

Experience a close-up look at the historic Viking City of Waterford on this guided walking tour.

Meeting your guide on the pier, it's a 30-minute coach transfer into the city center where your walking tour commences. The Vikings founded Waterford City some 1,100 years ago and it had extensive trading links with Viking settlements overseas. Later, in the year 1170, the city was taken by the Normans who sealed their victory by the marriage of their leader Strongbow to Aoife, daughter of the King of Leinster. Learn the history of this fascinating city in a humorous and light-hearted way as your guide walks you through the narrow winding streets. Your guide will also relay some interesting facts about the city. For instance, the only family in the world, which has a father and son both decorated with the Victoria Cross for bravery, was the Roberts family who hail from Waterford.

The walking portion of your tour will conclude after 1-hour at The Granary where an inside visit will be made to this historic museum. Housed in this wonderful building is the Waterford Treasures Museum. On display in the museum are treasures of gold, bronze, silver and crystal. Learn how the Viking Kite Brooch is very much part of the Irish tradition and see the Penrose Decanter, which dating back to 1790, is one of the oldest surviving pieces of Waterford Crystal from that time. The original Waterford Glassworks were located in the vicinity of the Granary building.

Following an enjoyable and informative visit to the museum, free time will be allowed in the city center for you to explore on your own or do some shopping before it's time to re-join your coach for the return transfer to the pier.

Please note: This tour is primarily a walking tour and guests should be able to walk and/or stand for up to 3 hours. The tour is not considered suitable for wheelchair guests or those guests with mobility concerns. Weather appropriate clothing and flat, comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
