Duration: 6 hours
Tour Code: PTN-010
This all-encompassing excursion presents the highlights of affluent Kennebunkport, a scenic river cruise, lunch at a classic Maine inn, and a stop at the state's oldest lighthouse.
Your day begins with a scenic drive south to Kennebunkport, taking in the views of Maine's rocky shoreline along the way. A charming coastal village, Kennebunkport gained worldwide fame in the early 1990s as the summer residence of the George H.W. Bush family. The architecture here is extraordinarily stunning, as there are numerous restored homes from the 18th and 19th centuries, including the renowned Wedding Cake House.
Upon arrival at Dock Square, you'll board your sightseeing boat for a picturesque cruise along the Kennebunk River. The boat affords wonderful views of the affluent community, the idyllic shoreline and landmarks like the Bush compound on Walker's Point. After the cruise, you'll have some free time in Dock Square to browse its collection of upscale shops, restaurants and art galleries.
Rejoining your coach, it's on to Nonantum Resort, one of the oldest, most beautiful New England-style inns in Kennebunkport. Nonantum is a Native American Algonquian word meaning "blessing." Here, you'll enjoy a classic Maine luncheon with selections such as chowder, lobster roll (or chicken salad) and a blueberry-infused dessert.
On the return to Portland, you'll stop at Fort Williams Park, home to the Portland Head Light where you will have time to take some photos. Maine's oldest lighthouse, it was first illuminated in 1791 using whale oil lamps. The lighthouse stands 72 feet high and contains a museum in the former keeper's quarters that celebrates the lighthouse's substantial role in keeping the seas safe. Following your stop, you'll drive directly back to the pier and your awaiting ship.
Please note: Walking on this tour is mainly at the guests' discretion during the stops and free time in Dock Square. There will be 6 large steps to negotiate when entering and exiting the boat. The tour may not be suitable for those who suffer from motion sickness and is not available to wheelchair guests. Those with mobility concerns are cautioned to carefully evaluate their personal level of stamina and ability. Weather appropriate clothing; sun cap; sunglasses; and flat, comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
