3 Day / 2 Night Post Land Program
DAY 1 – October 4, 2016
Disembark your ship in Southampton this morning and embark on a magical day of adventure following in the footsteps of the world famous Downton Abbey television series. Meet your guide and drive to Basildon Park, set of the Downton Abbey Christmas Special 2013, which sees the efforts to recover an incriminating letter unfold. Photographs and costumes from the TV series are on display and a knowledgeable house guide will explain how this National Trust property was turned into the Grantham’s London Residence.
Leave Basildon Park behind and head to the charming village of Bampton. The village has featured heavily in the Downton Abbey television series as “Downton Village.” Here, meet a local who will be able to show you around the village, sharing what it’s like when the Downton Abbey filming team transforms Bampton into “Downton Village.”
Next, it’s onto lunch, where you’ll meet Diana, the Head Guide of the nearby Highclere Castle, home of Downton Abbey. After lunch, we head into central London to check into your accommodation. You’ll have some time at leisure to prepare yourself for the evening’s welcome reception and dinner.
A short walk from your hotel location, you’ll find Home House, an exclusive private members club situated in the heart of central London. Located across three Georgian town houses at 19, 20 and 21 Portman Square, Home House Private Member’s Club offers its guests the dramatic fusion of the old and the new. Here, enjoy a cocktail reception followed by dinner. Hosting the evening will be Jessica Fellowes, niece of best-selling author (A Year in the Life of Downton Abbey) and niece of Downton Abbey co-creator and scriptwriter Julian Fellows.
DAY 2 – October 5, 2016
Following breakfast at your hotel, we’ll depart and head by motorcoach through the heart of central London. From the hustle and bustle of Leicester Square at the heart of London’s theatre district; to the quiet parks with their trees and lakes, and the grandeur of Buckingham Palace - London’s fascination is its variety – old and new stand side by side. History, pageantry and tradition mix with the modern, eccentric and avant-garde, offering something for everyone.
We make our way from west to east to our destination, Shakespeare’s Globe theatre, situated in an impressive position on the south bank of the River Thames. Visit the engaging and informative on-site exhibition which explores the life of Shakespeare, the London where he lived, and the theatre for which he wrote. Imagine the Globe as it would have been: the centre of what was once London's most notorious entertainment district, surrounded by raucous taverns and bawdy-houses.
Continue with a visit to the Globe Theatre. Expert guides will take you on a fascinating tour of the iconic Globe Theatre, bringing the space to life with colourful stories of the 1599 Globe, of the reconstruction process in the 1990s, and of how the ‘wooden O’ works today as an imaginative and experimental theatrical space.
Finally, you’ll get to watch an exciting demonstration of Elizabethan stage combat techniques. This includes an explanation of how stage fighting was used by Shakespeare and his contemporaries in early modern plays
After our visit to The Globe is complete, we head to the fashionable and highly regarded Savile Club, Mayfair. A distinguished private members club, the Savile Club was transformed by Downton Abbey’s set designers to create the famous scene of Lady Rose flirting with jazz singer, Jack Ross. An impressive venue, the Savile Club has opened its doors today to provide exclusive access to the group. Explore the Club at your own leisure, enjoy a glass of champagne, take pictures of the areas used for filming and then sit down for a sumptuous two-course meal in the grand ballroom.
Upon returning to the hotel, you’ll have some time at leisure before we continue with our evening program. Prepare to leave your hotel this evening and head to London’s world famous West End theatre district. This part of London has been heavily linked with theatre dating back to the opening of the first West End venue in Dury Lane in 1663. Locals and visitors continue to flock to the West End to be enthralled by the various shows on offer.
This evening we’re heading to the Aldwych Theatre for a performance of “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical.” Carole King, the chart-topping music legend, was an ordinary girl with an extraordinary talent. She fought her way into the record industry as a teenager and sold her first hit, “Will You Love Me Tomorrow”, when she was just seventeen. By the time she was twenty, she was writing number ones for the biggest acts in rock ‘n’ roll, including the Drifters, The Shirelles and Aretha Franklin. But her greatest challenge was to find her own voice and finally step into the spotlight.
After the performance completes, return to your motorcoach for transfer back to the hotel.
DAY 3 – Thursday, October 6, 2016
Following breakfast on this final morning, prepare for departure and transfer by motorcoach to London Heathrow airport for onward travel connections.
