Kavala, Greece-port

Explore ancient Kavala with its striking mountains, crystalline waters, and multicultural buildings hugging the cliffs. Both the fortress and the Kavala aqueduct date back to the 16th Century. Visit the marketplace, stop for a coffee, stroll through the new shops and galleries. Look for ceramics, great wine, fine leather, white marble, handmade cigars, and designer clothing. The Castle of Kavala and the castle at Palaiochori are not to be missed. Then one of the many museums – the Archaeological Museum or the Municipal Museum top the list. The Imararet, the home built by Mohammed Ali Pasha in the 19th Century boasts Ottoman architecture and spectacular views of the sea. Linger over a meal of local specialties, stuffed eggplant or grilled seafood. Enjoy a glass of wine, a coffee and pastry as you absorb the harmony of Kavala.

Historic Xanthi

Light Activity /Walking

Duration: 5 1/4 hours

Tour Code: KAV-002

Explore the region's diverse culture and history on a delightful walking tour of Xanthi's Old Town and then sample the local cuisine by snacking on mezedes.

Departing from the pier, your coach will journey northeast toward the Nestos River delta. During a brief stop here, you'll be able to take in the sights in this remarkably scenic coastal area, which Greece has proclaimed as a Wetland of International Importance. The diversity of flora and fauna is considerable, especially the species of birds, which number more than 250. You'll want to be sure to capture some photos here before re-boarding your coach and continuing on to Xanthi, another area rich in wildlife.

Known as the "City of a Thousand Colors" because of the influence of numerous conquerors, Xanthi boasts a wonderfully preserved Old Town, which you will explore during your guided walking tour. Perhaps the town's most distinguishing characteristic is its wonderful architecture as evidenced best in expansive Metropolis Square. Here, in the center of town, you will be surrounded by numerous historic buildings made of stone and wood. The Timios Prodromos church is of particular note. Xanthi is also well known for its sweets and pastries, which you will find in abundance in the Old Town.

Following your guided walking tour, you will have some free time to further explore on your own before rejoining your group and traveling to a nearby taverna, where you will be treated to a sampling of traditional mezedes (Greek appetizers) accompanied with a glass of local wine. Afterwards, you will re-board your coach and transfer back to the pier in Kavala where your tour concludes.

Please note: This tour includes approximately 1-hour of walking in Xanthi, plus any additional walking at the guests' discretion during free time. There are some uneven surfaces to negotiate. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests and those with mobility concerns are cautioned to carefully evaluate their personal level of stamina and ability. Weather appropriate clothing; sun cap; sunglasses and flat, comfortable walking shoes are suggested.
