Ephesus (Kusadasi), Turkey-port

Originally a minor port, Kusadasi now serves as the gateway to Ephesus, one of the ancient world’s largest and most important archaeological and religious sites. As you walk the white marbled pathway, note the grooves made by centuries of chariot wheels. Stand in awe before the great Library of Celsus, and sit for a moment as the past seems to come alive at the Great Amphitheater, carved from the side of a mountain. Sacred places nearby include the Basilica of St. John and the House of the Virgin Mary.

Ancient Ephesus

Moderate Activity/Walking

Duration: 2 1/2 hours

Tour Code: KSA-007

Take a walk through Turkish history during this scenic introduction to the ancient port city of Ephesus.

Depart the pier in Kusadasi for the drive to the fabulous ruins of Ephesus. En route, you will pass through rural Turkish villages and countryside dotted with orchards of fig trees. The port city of Ephesus is one of the 12 cities of Ionia located near modern Izmir, and was formerly a major departure point for trade routes into Asia Minor.

Upon arrival in Ephesus, you will explore the ancient shrines for which the city is renowned; a famous temple that is among the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, the beautifully restored Celsus Library and the Grand Theater. Next, you will return to Kusadasi to watch a traditional carpet weaving demonstration. You will sip apple tea while watching a myriad of colors unfold before your eyes, and have an opportunity to purchase a carpet, if so desired.

Following your visit, you may opt to re-board the coach for the return drive to the pier, or be dropped off in Kusadasi for shopping and return to the ship on-foot.

Please note: Guests are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes for this tour, which involves mostly downhill, extensive walking on uneven surfaces for approximately 1.5 hours at the site. This tour is not recommended for guests with limited mobility or guests who utilize a wheelchair. At the end of the tour, guests will be dropped off in town, as the buses are not allowed to return them to the Cruise Ship Terminal parking lot. There will be a short walk from the drop-off point in town back to the Kusadasi Terminal Building.
