Bavella - the Hidden Corsica
Duration: 4 1/4 hours
Tour Code: PCH-005
Explore the hauntingly beautiful interior of southern Corsica, a landscape of rugged granite mountains, pristine pine forests and charming French communes.
After departing from the pier, you will settle in for a relaxing and immensely scenic drive into Corsica’s largely undeveloped interior. The landscape tends to be wild and dramatic, punctuated by classic mountain communes that include Sotta and Carbini. Most of the buildings are stone, topped with red-tiled roofs. You might also see hikers heading to and from the mountains as this area is crisscrossed with nature trails.
Continuing even deeper into the interior, you will approach Bavella, a group of jagged granite peaks that rise more than 6,000 feet above sea level. This area is considered one of the most beautiful in all of Corsica, and the main inhabitants are wild mountain sheep and the occasional rock climber.
The panoramic views are stunning, which you will discover while pausing at Bavella for photos and to stretch your legs. The trees in this rocky landscape are primarily laricio pines, a native species that often lives for more than 500 years.
Later, you’ll stop in the commune of Zonza where you will have some free time to stroll about and explore the shops. Don’t be surprised if you see more hikers, as there are numerous trailheads near town. Finally, you will descend along the winding roads in the forested Ospedale region, which offer gorgeous glimpses of the sea on the return to the pier.
