Delve into the architectural splendor of spellbinding Bologna, a UNESCO City of Music, on a walking tour of its historical squares and churches. Journey approximately 75 minutes into the heartland of the Emilia-Romagna region to its capital, beguiling Bologna, highly regarded for its medieval, Renaissance and Baroque architecture. You’ll set off on your walking tour in the expansive pedestrian square, Piazza Maggiore, which is surrounded by magnificent medieval buildings such as the Palazzo del Podestà. Appreciate the 16th-century Fountain of Neptune, a bronze depiction of the aquatic god controlling the waters. Nearby, you’ll find the San Petronio Basilica, one of Europe’s largest churches, and learn Pope Pius IV halted its construction so it wouldn’t eclipse Rome’s Saint Peter’s Cathedral. Next door, notice the Palazzo del Archiginnasio, once the University of Bologna’s main building, which was erected to fill the space the cathedral would have occupied had it been completed according to its original plan, and hear that it contains a fascinating 17th-century anatomical theater where cadavers were publicly dissected to further knowledge of the human body.
