Best of Helsingborg & Sofiero
Duration: 3 hours
Tour Code: HLB-002
Admire the architectural beauty of Helsingborg’s historical downtown, followed by a tour of nearby Sofiero gardens, the ultimate expression of Sweden’s natural beauty.
Depart from the pier and enjoy a brief but scenic drive through Helsingborg, where highlights include the neo-Gothic Town Hall, the main square of Stortorget, and a beautiful half-timbered house built in 1641. In the center of town, you will visit Helsingborg’s iconic Kärnan, a medieval keep that sits atop a rocky ridge. It’s all that remains of the once-impenetrable, 14th-century Helsingborg Castle. Restored in the 1890s, the keep served as a navigation landmark for years and has since become a symbol for the city. From the terraced steps, you will have an excellent view of Denmark across narrow Oresund strait, the arm of the Baltic Sea that separates Sweden from Denmark.
Continuing on to the north, you will soon arrive at Sofiero Castle, once the summer residence of Sweden’s royal family. As impressive as the building is, the estate’s lush gardens are the real attraction. In fact, the gardens and surrounding grounds have been awarded a citation for being the most beautiful park in Europe. Of particular note are the more than 10,000 rhododendron bushes, which bloom each summer. The gardens also contain several sculptures that enhance the setting.
After visiting, you will drive back to the pier, taking time for a photo stop in the picturesque former fishing village of Raa.
