Cartagena Fortress and Old City

Moderate Activity/Walking

Duration: 3 1/4 hours

Tour Code: CTG-005

Explore Cartagena's architectural beauty and historic past during this memorable tour of the San Felipe Fortress, and a visit to the Old City.

Depart the pier for the drive to the San Felipe Fortress, the largest Spanish fort in the New World. Commissioned by the Spanish Crown during the 17th century, the San Felipe Fortress took 208 years to complete. The fortress features seven miles of walls surrounding the city, with fortifications on every point and narrows to defend against military attacks. Upon arrival, you will take a guided tour of the castle.

Next, your drive will proceed to the Old City, which offers lovely views of the ocean. During your visit, you will walk approximately five blocks through the city's Colonial area. Along the way, a stop will be made at the Saint Peter Claver Church and Cloister, which was built in homage to the protector of slaves. You will also view the remains of Saint Peter Claver, which are encased upon the High Altar. A brief stop will then be made under the huge trees in the cloister's courtyard to see the well used by Saint Peter Claver to baptize tens of thousands of black slaves.

Your walk through the Old City will continue on with a visit to the Inquisition Plaza, or Bolivar Plaza, the main square of the city. With the cathedral on one side and the Inquisition Palace on the other, this plaza is full of history and beautiful Colonial buildings.

Your tour will conclude with a drive to the modern part of the city. Upon arrival, a brief stop will be made at the Pierino Gallo Plaza, and an opportunity to shop for Cartagena's finest emeralds, jewelry, coffee, handcrafts, and leather goods.

Following your visit, you will be transferred back to the pier.
