Colonia Del Sacramento Choice of Unesco
Duration: 8 1/2 hours
Tour Code: MVD-006
The past truly comes alive in this wonderful tour geared for history lovers. Leaving from the pier, you coach will first pass Independence Square and the Gral Artigas Monument, which commemorates independence leader and national hero, General José Artigas.
Leaving the city behind, it's a relaxing 2 ½ hour drive to Colonia del Sacramento which rests along the Rio de la Plata, directly across from Buenos Aires, Argentina. The oldest city in Uruguay, it was founded by the Portuguese in 1680, during a time when Spain and Portugal were in the midst of confrontations. For over a hundred years, both empires fought to control the city until finally, the Treaty of Saint Ildefonso awarded it to Spain. As you walk through this historical old city that was named as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1995, you will discover that the past still lives in its cobblestone streets, stone walls and amazing architecture. The streets of Santa Rita, San Gabriel, the Matriz Church, San Pedro Road and the famous "Calle de los Suspiros" are often used as the settings for historical films. Other sites in the city that beckon visitors are the Puerta del Campo and the Plaza Mayor 25 de Mayo. There are also many museums that document the city's voyage through time through exquisite displays of artifacts dating back hundreds of years. In addition to possessing amazing cultural and architectural value, Colonia del Sacramento is also complimented with outstanding natural beauty, boasting lush greenery and the presence of the picturesque Rio de la Plata. Some of the most notable sites found here are the Cathedral, the lighthouse and the Real de San Carlos bullring. This imposing bullring with its distinctive Moorish style, was inaugurated in 1910 by a contingent of the very best Spanish bull-fighters. However, bull-fighting was outlawed in Uruguay in 1912 and the bullring has since become a National Historical Monument, maintained by the government.
Your afternoon begins with relaxing lunch at Meson de la Plaza restaurant and then continues with an overview of the downtown area before it's time to begin the return journey to the pier in Montevideo.
