Ports and Excursions of South America

Valparaíso, Chile-port

Valparaíso is the principal port and second largest city of Chile. The city is situated on the shores of a sweeping bay and on a crescent of hills behind. Seen from the ocean, it presents a majestic panorama; a great circle of hills is backed by the snow-capped peaks of the distant Cordillera. Due to Valparaiso’s convenient location along the shipping routes circling Cape Horn, the port experienced a tremendous boost when the ports and the Americas were opened to world trade.

Duration: 8 hours

Tour Code: VAP-004

Your day begins with a scenic two-hour journey from the pier in Valparaiso, crossing the central valley and the coastal mountain range en route to the vibrant city of Santiago. With the Andes Mountains serving as a dramatic back-drop, you'll be able to discover the many facets of this city that is both filled with history, and yet completely cosmopolitan.

Upon arrival in Santiago, you will embark on a panoramic tour that includes the most important highlights of both historic and modern Santiago, including La Moneda (Presidential Palace). Some of the other sites you will view are the Plaza de Armas with the Cathedral, and the newer residential areas which will include a visit one of the lookouts located half way up San Cristobal Hill. From this wonderful vantage point high above Santiago, you will be treated to some magnificent views of the city.

At mid-day, you will be dropped in an area where there are some dining venues and you will have approximately 1-hour to enjoy lunch on your own at an eatery of your choosing. Afterwards, you will re-join your coach and travel to Los Dominicos handicraft market in the Las Condes district. This delightful shopping area is designed to resemble a small village and has numerous handicraft shops. Here, you will find artisans working in copper, wool, ceramics, lapis lazuli, and other indigenous materials. Free time is provided to enjoy a stroll around the village and perhaps purchase some souvenirs before it's time to re-board the coach for your return transfer to Valparaiso and your waiting ship.

Please note: This tour includes a moderate amount of walking over mostly even surfaces. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests and those guests with mobility concerns are cautioned to evaluate their personal level of ability and stamina. Guests should be prepared to experience high temperatures in Santiago, as opposed to the cooler coastal climate found in Valparaiso. Casual clothing and comfortable, flat walking shoes are suggested. The order of the sites visited or viewed may vary.
