  • The first German colonists arrived to this area in 1852, and have remained to the present day, a small but influential percentage of the 130,000 inhabitants. The town spreads along a narrow seaboard and climbs the slopes enclosing it to the north. Since 1985, the city has experienced considerable growth and development, fueled by more than 30 salmon farms, in addition to forestry, fishing industries and service companies. A gateway to Chile’s picturesque lakes and spectacular indigo mountains.

    Puerto Montt's historic sites and spectacular beauty are yours to discover during this scenic journey to Puerto Varas and Frutillar.

    Depart the pier for a panoramic drive of Puerto Montt. Founded in 1853 by German settlers, Puerto Montt serves as the capital of the Lake District. Along the way, you will see the Main Square, or Plaza de Armas. You will then proceed north to Lake Llanquihue. Chile's largest lake, it is dominated by the impressive, snow-capped Osorno Volcano. From here, your drive will continue on toward Puerto Varas. Stop at the main plaza in Puerto Varas, known as the City of Roses, for a stunning view of Lake Llanquihue.

    Next, you will continue on to Frutillar, a charming German-style village situated on the west side of Lake Llanquihue; South America's third-largest natural lake. Upon arrival, a visit will be made to the interesting local museum for an insight into the life of the German settlers who colonized the area in the late-19th century. Frutillar is also known for its high quality cuisine and old German delikatessen.

    Following your visit, you will re-board your coach and return to Puerto Montt via the same route.

The tour is not available to wheelchair guests and those guests with mobility concerns are cautioned only to participate to the extent of their personal stamina and ability and may make arrangements with the guide to not participate in some of the walking portions of the tour. Once back in Puerto Montt, you may opt to be taken directly to the pier, or dropped off at the port gates for a visit to Angelmó, the local Fish and Handicraft Market, and a nearby fishing village where the houses are built on stilts over the water. Afterward, you will return to the pier at your own expense.

  • The Nature & Culture of Ayaltue Park

    Visit a privately owned park in a serene Chilean forest that celebrates the traditional way of life through organic farming, mythology, and local customs.

    Starting off from the pier, you will follow the scenic coastline south to Ayaltué, a cultural park and village in Chile's pristine Northern Patagonia. Meaning "beautiful and beloved land" in one of the local dialects, Ayaltué is privately owned and ensures an intimate, hands-on cultural experience.

    Upon arrival at the Park's Welcome Center, you will receive a short briefing about the Park and then proceed to the museum. Amongst the exhibits you will find a replica of a traditional kitchen in a Northern Patagonian country home. You will also see tools used for working the land and fishing. From the museum, you will next walk along a winding trail in a forest of native species that include towering canelos, which are cinnamon trees that the ancient people of Chile considered sacred. Depending on the trail you take, you may find examples of traditional homes built by the agrarian Veliches Indians, or vessels built by the seafaring Chono Indians. Later, you will be offered samples of smoked salmon, a locally caught staple.

    In the Mythological Park, you will encounter sculptures of several beings deeply rooted in the local mythology and learn the rituals associated with them. Rituals are also essential to the harvest, as you will discover by watching the park's organic farmers harvest potatoes, strawberries and medicinal herbs.

    After what will surely be a fascinating visit experiencing up-close the unique cultural heritage and nature of this amazing land, you will re-board your coach for the drive back to Puerto Montt. Arriving at the port gate, you will have the option of disembarking the coach and heading off to do some independent exploration of the city, or going straight back to the ship.

    Experience the Osomo Volcano's majestic beauty in an exhilarating new way during this memorable treetop canopy adventure.

    Depart the pier for the drive north through Chile's famous Lake District, then on to the majestic Osorno Volcano, which towers more than 1.5 miles above sea level. The first platform of the canopy is located on the slopes of this volcano. The canopy consists of a series of platforms that are firmly built on the area's high treetops, and joined together by steel cables. Upon arrival, you will receive your safety and climbing instructions, then be outfitted with your equipment and harness before commencing your canopy adventure.

    As you begin your exhilarating descent, you will feel the sensation of flying through the air. Along the way, you will take in the beauty of the surrounding landscapes, flora and fauna as you travel from tree-to-tree. The highlight of your excursion will be passing through an 820-foot crossing in Chucao Canyon. Here, you will see rocks more than 300 feet high and beautiful cascades. Upon reaching the Gran Coihue platform, you will take in a splendid view overlooking Lake Llanquihue; Chile's largest natural lake, and third-largest lake in South America. After crossing four more platforms, you will finally reach the base. The trees in this area are more than 130 feet high, and the maximum speed during the descent will be 27 miles per hour.

    Following this thrilling adventure, you will re-board your coach and drive to Ensenada for a stop for lunch. On the return drive to Puerto Montt, a stop will be made in Puerto Varas to take pictures and purchase some goods at the local handicraft market.
