Land Programs & Hotels

  • Just beyond Bali’s familiar shores, discover the Soul of Sumba on an extraordinary four-day escape—where ancient traditions, vibrant culture, and breathtaking island beauty await. Let the island’s ancient rituals, warm hospitality, and breathtaking beauty awaken your senses—from the moment you land and settle into luxurious beachfront comfort, to immersive village encounters and unforgettable evenings under starlit skies. This exclusive journey promises authentic connection, relaxation, and discovery in one of Indonesia’s most enchanting destinations.

    Special Notes:

•Any guests travelling with Portable Oxygen Concentrators (POC) or CPAP breathing machines should read further below about airline stipulations with regards to bringing this equipment on tour.

•Please advise the RSSC Reservations team when you book this program should you have any special dietary restrictions or requirements. Requests will be sent to our local ground operators for review. There is a set menu meal on Day 3. Changes will not be able to be accommodated at the last minute.

    DAY 1

Upon arrival at Bali’s International Airport, a warm welcome awaits—your local English-speaking guide will be standing by in the arrivals hall ready to escort you to your private, air-conditioned vehicle for a seamless transfer to your hotel for check-in.

Solo travellers will transfer in a sedan and couples in a van. Sedans hold 2 pieces of luggage, plus 2 carry-on bags. Vans hold 4 pieces of luggage plus, 2 or 3 carry-on bags. If you have more luggage than is permissible, a larger vehicle may be required for additional cost. Please advise your booking agent at least 21 days before sailing if a larger vehicle is required.

Check in time is at 3:00pm. Should you arrive earlier your room may not be ready. In this case we suggest purchasing an extra night to guarantee availability when you arrive.

Today’s meals are left at leisure at your personal expense.

For groups of ten guests or more staying in-house, a Regent Seven Seas Hospitality Desk will be available at the hotel.

Note: Due to luggage restrictions on the flights during this program, we recommend packing one suitcase per person and leaving any excess at the hotel and transfer to the port on day 4. Your Welcome Letter will provide further details.

    DAY 2

After a restful night in Sanur, check out of your hotel settling any incidentals and storing any excess luggage before your transfer to Ngurah Rai Airport for a flight to the island of Sumba.

Located in eastern Indonesia, Sumba is renowned for its rugged landscapes, pristine beaches, and rich cultural heritage. Unlike its more developed neighbors, Sumba remains largely unspoiled, with vast savannahs, rolling hills, and remote villages where ancient customs thrive. The local Marapu religion shapes daily life with elaborate rituals and sacred ceremonies, while traditional houses—distinctive with their towering, peaked roofs—dot the countryside. Sumba is also famous for exquisite handwoven ikat textiles, crafted by skilled artisans using techniques passed down through generations. The island’s biodiversity is equally remarkable, home to rare bird species and unique flora, making it a haven for nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers.

Upon arrival here, you’ll be greeted and taken to Makan Dulu, an open-air restaurant run by the Sumba Hospitality Foundation, a local non-profit organization. This social enterprise gives approximately fifteen students hands-on training in culinary and service skills—every meal served supports their vocational education and reinvests into the foundation.

After lunch, you’ll visit the Sumba Cultural Centre, where you'll have a concise introduction to the island’s traditions—everything from textile weaving to ancestral rituals—before heading on to your hotel.

Located along the shores of a coral reef and bordered by turquoise lagoons and traditional villages, Cap Karoso serves as an elegant base for discovering the Indonesian island of Sumba.

During your stay you may wish to experience the variety of aquatic environments surrounding the resort, including swimming or snorkeling in the serene Karoso Lagoon, surfing at Pero, fishing with local fishermen, or exploring the distinctive turquoise waters of Weekuri saltwater lake.

For those looking for something more serene, expert Sumbanese instructors provide daily yoga and meditation sessions that incorporate unique elements of Sumbanese tradition and the spa, situated within a traditional Sumbanese residence, features treatments inspired by ancient shamanic healing rituals utilizing botanicals sourced from their on-site farm and neighboring communities.

As your day winds down, consider a stroll along the beautiful shoreline. Dinner is at your leisure, allowing you to choose when and where to dine in the calm surroundings of the resort.

    DAY 3

After breakfast the day unfolds with a journey into the highlands of Sumba. A short drive brings you to Waikaroko, a traditional village where life remains beautifully anchored in ancestral rhythm.

You’ll be welcomed with song and dance—a vibrant expression of local warmth and pride—before being invited to walk among the tall, thatched uma, homes that shelter both the living and the spirits of those who came before.

Meet with village elders to learn about Marapu, Sumba’s ancestral belief system that continues to shape daily life on the island. Rooted in animism, Marapu centers on maintaining harmony between humans, nature, and the spirit world, with rituals often tied to agriculture, ancestor worship, and sacred sites.

After this insightful exchange, return to your hotel for an afternoon at leisure. Rest, explore the surroundings, or simply unwind.

In the evening, gather again for a private group beach dinner including a three-course set menu, live Humba acoustic music, a traditional Sumba dance, and the serene view of grazing Sumbanese horses.

    DAY 4

After breakfast, check-out, settling any incidentals before your transfer to the airport and the flight back to Bali.

Upon arrival in Bali, you will be met by our local guide who will assist you with a transfer from the airport to the pier where your ship will be waiting for you to embark.

Land Program Details Step by Step:

•Please note: The order of sites visited may vary to avoid congestion. This program is subject to flight confirmations which are beyond our control. All program details including timings and any flights indicated below are approximate, given here for general reference purposes and subject to change. Direct flights are never guaranteed.

•Itineraries with the most up to date details (at the time) will be issued when you are emailed with your final cruise documents 21 days prior to sailing. You will then receive one last final itinerary from our ground operator with a Welcome Letter upon arrival or at your hotel. Please review that Welcome Letter and your final itinerary carefully for any further amendments.

•The hotels used for your land program will be the hotels listed in this document unless you have been advised otherwise in advance of the land program start date.

•Guests failing to arrive on Day 1 of a scheduled land program will be considered a no-show and their hotel space released.

    Extra Nights

•If you book extra nights through the cruise line, you will be met as per the flight details provided and transferred to your hotel. Check-in is 3:00pm (subject to change). Meals other than breakfast, as well as activities, are on your own until day 2 of the program.

    Arrive at Denpasar, Bali airport.

You are met outside customs and transferred to your hotel to spend the afternoon and the evening at your leisure.

Overnight at the Hyatt Regency Sanur or similar hotel

    Meet and Greet and transfers

•Final cruise documents will be emailed 21 days prior to sailing. The local ground agent’s telephone number will be on page 1, if you can’t locate the meet-and-greet representative upon arrival. Be aware that the representative may be assisting others and may not be in sight when you first exit Customs and the luggage claim area.

•Look for someone holding a sign with the cruise line logo and possibly your name. If in doubt, ask the airport staff to direct you to the meeting area for transfers or to page our representative.

•Meet and Greet and transfers are arranged for guests arriving on Day 1 of a land program or for extra nights booked through the cruise line and are arranged based on the flight details received by guests at least 14 days before sailing. Guests arriving independently before the start date will not have a transfer included.

•If we have not received your flight details or your flights have changed, and the Destination Services Land Team has not been notified, then a transfer cannot be provided, and guests will be responsible for getting to the land program hotel at their own expense. Expected Weather:

Hot and Dry. December in Sumba is typically warm with daytime temperatures averaging 30–32°C (86–90°F). Rain is possible but usually brief and scattered. Humidity can rise during midday, especially inland. The coastal breeze offers some relief, but sun exposure is strong throughout the day.

    What to Bring:

This is a casual and culturally immersive program, so lightweight, breathable clothing is recommended.

Please keep local customs in mind:

•Avoid revealing clothing; covered shoulders and knee-length shorts or skirts are appropriate for village visits.

•Bring a hat or head covering, sunscreen, sunglasses, and mosquito repellent—especially for early morning or evening activities.

•Comfortable, closed-toe walking shoes are essential for village terrain. Flip-flops or sandals are not recommended for cultural visits.

•A small pack of tissues or wet wipes can also be useful, as facilities may be basic in rural areas.

•While dinner is relaxed, you may wish to bring a casual outfit for the evening.

    Local Currency:

The local currency in Sumba is the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR). Credit cards are not widely accepted outside of a few hotels and restaurants, so it is essential to carry cash. While some places may accept US Dollars, it is not guaranteed. Rupiah is strongly preferred for local purchases, tips, and entry fees.

We recommend bringing smaller denominations of USD for emergency use, but it’s best to exchange money before arriving in Sumba, either in Bali, or at the airport. ATMs in Sumba are limited and may not always be reliable, so prepare accordingly.

    Electricity

Rooms are typically equipped with 220-volt, two-round-pin (European-style) electrical outlets. We recommend traveling with a universal adapter if you plan to use electronic devices from other countries.

    Luggage information

On the flights between Bali and Sumba guests will be permitted to check one bag per person weighing no more than 20kg (44lbs) and one small carry on that will fit in the overhead bin or under the seat in front of you.

Any additional or overweight pieces will be in excess, and fees will be paid to the airline at your expense when checking in. For this reason, should you wish, you may store excess luggage in Bali at your hotel. It will be transferred to the pier on Day 4 of the program.

Please ensure that any excess bags left for storage are tagged properly and visibly with your full name and suite number on the ship. Note that Regent Seven Seas Cruises, the hotel, nor our local ground operator are responsible or liable for any lost or missing items. We do not recommend leaving valuables behind or in checked luggage. You should keep any valuables, medications and documents with you in your carry-on handbag.

Carriage of Portable Oxygen Concentrators (POC) or CPAP breathing machines on internal flights per airline regulations (subject to change as each airline has their own regulations)

1.Portable Oxygen Concentrator (POC) - Guests must obtain a Doctor’s Certificate mentioning their medical condition and the need to carry a POC. Further paperwork may be required by the airline.

2.CPAP Machine NOT being used in flight – please advise RSSC at least 95 days before your cruise if you will bring a CPAP on the internal flight(s) used in this land program. Please supply the make, model and battery type.

3.CPAP Machine to be used during flight – same as above + a doctor’s note is required mentioning the need to use the machine during flight.

*Guests are required to bring with them any details from the manufacturer regarding the CPAP specifications. While most modern CPAP machines are FAA-approved for in-flight use, having a copy of your manufacturer’s FAA-approval status will help to quickly clear any confusion that may arise.

    * Failure to provide the above details in a timely manner may result in a denial of this equipment at the airport for which Regent Seven Seas Cruises nor our local ground operator will be responsible for.

*Some hotels do not provide distilled water. While we can certainly request this for you, we cannot guarantee that it will be available. If received in a timely manner, at least 95 days before sailing, requests will be sent on the final manifest that our ground operators and hotels receive. We highly recommend packing your own supply especially on programs that travel to more remote locations in order to avoid not having it. Please keep in mind the rule for liquids in carry-on bags. Many hotels will charge for distilled water. If there is a fee, this will be added to your hotel incidental account to be paid at check-out. Fees will vary from hotel to hotel.

    Documents and Visa Requirements:

Guests must carry a valid passport with at least 6 months’ validity

All travelers entering Indonesia must complete the Indonesia Customs Declaration (e-CD) online at Indonesian Customs Declaration (e-CD) should submit their details, including the date of arrival, three days before entering Indonesia

    VERY IMPORTANT

The name on your cruise booking, passport, and ANY visas, if required, must all be exactly the same for flight ticket purchase for this program otherwise guests may be denied travel by flight. Please ensure that all documents are identical in spelling to the names provided for your cruise reservation including first, middle and last name.

Manifests generated by the cruise line must match your travel documents. Guests are responsible to make sure that there are enough pages in their passports for any visas that are required – Minimum two pages for each visa.

Failure to have the required and correct documents ahead of time could result in denial of travel and guests will have to pay for any expenses incurred in order to not proceed with the program or guests may need to purchase new flight tickets at their own cost.

The above information is subject to change and serves as a guide only. We would like to take this opportunity to remind all of our guests that it is the ultimate and sole responsibility of the guest to ensure they meet the entry requirements for each destination.

If traveling internationally, the countries you are flying to and/ or connecting through may have different document requirements and as such we encourage you to visit the government and airport websites of every country you will be traveling to throughout the journey to familiarize yourself with their requirements for your nationality.

This bespoke full-day journey aboard a classic Land Rover invites you to experience Bali far beyond the well-trodden paths — a curated adventure through the island’s most authentic and awe-inspiring landscapes.

Traverse picturesque countryside roads framed by emerald rice terraces, passing through traditional villages where time seems to stand still. Along the way, enjoy rare encounters with Balinese artisans as they share the secrets of age-old traditions — from hand-carved woodwork and organic coconut oil production to local wine making. These intimate moments are complemented by freshly prepared Balinese delicacies, served in peaceful rural surroundings.

As your journey ascends, the landscape transforms. You’ll explore the dramatic terrain of Mount Batur, stepping onto the otherworldly Black Lava fields shaped by centuries of volcanic activity — a stark and stunning testament to nature’s raw power. From here, a serene drive through a whispering bamboo forest brings you to a secluded jungle setting, where a lavish Balinese feast awaits. Dine al fresco beneath the canopy, surrounded by the stillness of nature — a truly immersive culinary experience.

The expedition continues to the storied highlands of Bangli, where you’ll discover Kehen Temple — one of Bali’s oldest and most sacred sites, often overlooked by the typical traveller. This ancient sanctuary, rich in history and spiritual elegance, offers a moment of quiet reflection amid stone carvings and temple courtyards.

Relax in comfort on your return drive. With every mile, carry with you the essence of Bali — its flavors, its traditions, its untold stories — beautifully woven into a day of exploration designed exclusively for the curious and the refined.

Dinner is enjoyed independently upon return to the hotel

    - Meals included – Breakfast & Lunch

    DAY 3

After breakfast at the hotel, enjoy a free morning and afternoon at your leisure.

As evening descends on this tropical paradise and the last rays of the setting sun light up the sky with a warm red glow, the shadows and sounds of the night join together to cast a spell over the island, infusing it with an aura of mysticism. As twilight falls, you will travel by coach to Celuk Village, home of Silver and Gold Jewelers. The trade of silver and gold jeweler has become part of everyone’s life in Celuk.

Then, proceed to Bali's own amazing Bird Park. Here, an open-air dining area located in the center of the Park provides the setting for a delicious traditional Indonesian dinner. As you relax and enjoy your meal, the unique sounds of the native birds as they settle for the evening provide a tranquil background of nature's own music.

Following your meal, you will witness the utterly unique and fascinating performance of the Kecak Dance. Kecak is a ritual dance that recounts a tale from the Ramayana, an epic story that found its way from India to Indonesia. During the performance, the only musical accompaniment is the chanting that is supplied by men who are positioned in a concentric circle on the stage. As the men chant and rhythmically sway to the music, colorfully costumed dancers weave and intertwine their way amongst them. With the stage lit only by glowing torches, the shadows cast by the dancers combined with the haunting chanting, create a truly mesmerizing and unforgettable experience.

A pleasant drive back to the hotel concludes this very special evening of Balinese entertainment.

But ATOL protection does not apply to all holiday and travel services listed on this website. This website will provide you with information on the protection that applies in the case of each holiday and travel service offered before you make your booking. If you do not receive an ATOL Certificate then the booking will not be ATOL protected. If you do receive an ATOL Certificate but all the parts of your trip are not listed on it, those parts will not be ATOL protected. Please see our booking conditions for information, or for more information about financial protection and the ATOL Certificate go to: www.caa.co.uk.
